Hi JBanks I bought the OAR study guide last week and like everyone else I noticed that some of the questions were wrong. I also noticed that question #12 for Mechanical comprehension is wrong because if you have a 50 kg object you need to multiply it by 9.81 m/s^2 to convert it to Newtons (N) if you were to do this you would still get the same answer. what is wrong with this question is their reasoning in the back because they say Ff= 0.6*50N which is incorrect. also question # 6 should be D not A because (-60+90)/3 = +10 not -10.

Accepted Inc is working on pushing out their updated version this week. And i'm in a similar boat as you Jbanks. I take the test next Thursday, the 6th, and they will be sending me a corrected mechanical section in addition to the corrected math section I've already received.
Thanks for the heads up guys. I just recieved this book my self but have not had time to take a look at it. Looks like I need to e-mail them also. What was the e-mail that you guys send your problems to? Tryed the website and it is not working on my work computer. Jbanks, I posted a msg requesting the math update. Thanks in advance

Due to copywrite restrictions, they requested not to share the materials online or on message boards, instead if you purchased a copy email support@acceptedinc.com. They are really quick at returning replies and Mark has sent me both fixed Math and Mechanical sections.
Really great customer service in my opinion, they had a third party write their book and are trying to rectify their mistakes.

I wasn't counting, so I can't say this with any actual certainty, but: there's no way I did 30 math questions in the math section of the new ASTB. I had so much time left in that section, so much so that I was shocked when it switched to reading. And I do not do math problems quickly.

How was the math and mechanical sections? I'm hearing more logarithm and averages questions than many of the gouges lead on, also was there any section on mechanical where you've never seen the subject? What was your experience with this. Test day in two days!

just took the OAR portion of the test, and although it is obvious that not one test is alike, here is my feedback
-there is no set number of questions for each section...for the math, it cut off around maybe 15 or 20 questions, i had at least 20 mins left on time, but both the reading and mechanical, i had only a minute or so to go...time is 40 (math), 30 (reading), and 15 (mechanical)
-for both the math and mechanical, it is primarily intuitive...i spent a lot of time memorizing formulas or ways to solve certain arithmetic/word problems, and i literally did not come across one...the few arithmetic/word problems i did get both in math and mechanical i had not seen before...do not let this scare you though, just be prepared to figure out a new set of data
-the math had at least 4 questions on probability, such as, if you roll a pair of dice 2 times, what are your chances of..
-the ENTIRE reading section has this type of format:
"A storm must pass through different stages before becoming a hurricane. The onset of this process occurs when low pressure air spins inward cyclonically to form the eye of the building storm. During the intermediate stages of development, the storm is first referred to as a tropical depression, later as a tropical storm before increasing in intensity to become a hurricane.
(A) During the tropical depression stage of hurricane development, the eye is formed by winds moving in a clockwise direction.
(B) A hurricane is the most violent of all natural phenomena because the eye of the storm is composed of cyclonic air movement.
(C) Tropical storms do not contain eyes because they develop from high pressure air systems.
(D) Cyclonic air movement plays a central role in the creation of hurricane force winds."
...there are no synonyms, parts that ask you what the title would be, what does this explain, what word is wrong, none of that, all of it is a multiple choice of phrases that are from the passage, often they try to trick you with changing a word or two

I haven't been on the forum much because since I am currently enlisted and I had a lot of work to do to get to the point where I am now such as get a conditional release which took two months to sign and so fourth. I am finally done the process and my package is submitted to the board for review in April.
I took the ASTB back in December and I wanted to give my advice to you so that you may succeed as well. I took the test right before they changed to the new current version however, most of the mechanics I believe will be the same such as math, reading, nautical information, ect.
I studied for three months and most of those days especially in November I was spending hours at night studying and making sure I memorized/knew how to do everything. I probably made close to a thousand flash cards on everything except reading. I had a pile for math, nautical info, aviation, and mechanical comprehension. This is what I did and I highly recommend this to all of you:
Buy the following books:
Peterson's Master the Military Flight Aptitude Tests
Peterson's Master the Officer Candidate Tests
Barron's Military Flight Aptitude Tests
Barron's Mechanical Aptitude and Spatial Relations Test
Go through every section that would be on the ASTB including the sample problems and make a flash card for that problem. This is especially important for the mechanical and nautical info. Focus on every section except math (for now).
For Math you MUST buy this book:
Cliff Notes Math Review for Standardized Tests
I went through that book probably three to four times before I had mastered everything, do every type of problem that will be on the ASTB and skip sections that wouldn't pertain to it which would mostly be towards the very the end of the book after the word problems section. This book was critical to my success on the math portion of the ASTB, I was able to solve every single problem except for two and I finished quickly with time left to spare.
Once you have mastered that book and learned the formulas that will be key to your success (especially word problems such as time/distance/percentages, ect.) you can then go through the books that I had mentioned above and once again make a flash card for every math problem with a diagram of how to solve it, even the sample problems. On the back you can write hints/tips/formulas that you may not remember but after constant review you will. Also for math and mechanical make sure you look at each branches practice tests because they will have different/similar questions that can appear on the ASTB. This is also the same for the Air Force's practice tests as they will have a lot of aviation questions you can study.
Once you have created all your flash cards you will no longer need the books but you can now just focus on the cards. Make sure you can solve every type of problem and remember all the important key terms for nautical info/aviation. I can't be of any help to anything that's brand new on the current version but this info should help you solve the core sections. I also recommend you make flash cards on any problems found on the gouges that are floating around the forum.
Yes this takes a lot of time and dedication that all of you may not have however, if you do all of this you will master the ASTB and achieve a highly competitive score. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.

My test had a completely different section on the spatial apperception. It was a UAV and it had a map on the left portion that indicated which way North was and the course direction of the UAV. On the right hand side it had a building and four separate parking lots. You had to determine, based on which way the UAV was flying on your map (given to you), which parking lot was either, NORTH, SOUTH, WEST, OR EAST from an aerial camera. I have yet to find any study guides that have this, but this portion killed my score on the flight portion. I will have to retake the test in 90 days, so if anyone can find any information on this to help me study, that would help immensely.
