Huh? I think you're confused. I haven't tried anything hence why I'm trying to get set up. And I have no desire to fiddle with boot camp, that level of trouble shooting isn't my cup of tea. For it comes to that I'll just bring my laptop home and VPN.

So whats the deal with needing a smart card reader on your personal laptop? Are smart cards required to access the internet from squadron spaces?

One uses a smart card (your ID card) to access any DoD computer. I've seen some squadrons issue DH and above laptop computers - mostly to use on deployment, not at home. People use smart card readers at home to access their work email, plus most of the Navy sites that you use regularly require smart cards to access. It's actually better than having to remember 20 different passwords. I haven't seen WiFi at work (except at the War College), but internet access - slow and filtered though it may be - is ubiquitous ashore and on ships (where's it's so slow it's almost unusable.) Some common areas (BOQ, exchange facilities, medical) do have WiFi access that is not part of the government system (contracted out).

Single Sign On (SSO) with a smart card is the norm in a lot of organizations now. Thats a good thing - sux though in the age of tablets and light weight laptops that do not have card readers. The more contemporary approach is dual factor through a text message one time PIN to your phone. This plus a a "pass phrase" one time login suffices and is quite secure. I did not realize all DoD ID's were chipped now.

No, you have to use a Navy procured (and thus issued) smart phone. Everyone is moving over to iPhones now (away from the ubiquitous BlackBerry). Why can't I use my personal iPhone to access the same Exchange server? Because the world would blow up, obviously.

I have no idea. I never bothered to look because it wasn't a practical solution for me.

The only reason I know is that I think it was discussed on here awhile back. I seem to recall it was one of the Harrier guys talking about the specifics...maybe @squeeze ? I think @webmaster may have been involved too back when he was part of the problem and not some slimey civilian.
I agree that there'd be no reason for a Fleet JO to need something like that. I also agree that a setup like that could be invaluable for DHs and above.
Why, though? As a DH, the world was never going to end if someone couldn't get me on email. That's why you have the myriad of other players in your department (or your department is just really small and you're not that important anyway). Also, as a DH and an OIC, a cell phone was much more valuable than email, and that was usually because I was chasing down something in real time (embassy, my CO, husbanding agent, etc). Otherwise I'd go back to my state room and kick the CHENG off the computer and check my email.
I'd argue if you're at a level that you need to be on your email THAT much, you're probably already issued one (CO/XO/CMC/aide/etc)*.
*Note: I'm excluding SELRES here, as I understand not everyone has a computer anymore, so getting your CAC access on an iOS device could be helpful. But for an AD guy...meh.
