LSD drug ring bust on Navy FDNF ship

Had an dirt bag EM1 get busted for drinking with a junior sailor. He said it was cough syrup, bad news for him was when the CO caught him in the lie. CAPT busted him down, but EM1 was was already past HYT and was therefor on his way out. He decided he didn't like that option and disappeared after his restriction ended. Got a deserter once. Kid decided FTN after “A” school and just never showed up, never responded to contact. Public FB posts playing basketball with the bros back home. Got to fill out the arrest warrant for the CO to sign, and lo and behold, said idiot gets dropped off on our doorstep in cuffs a week or two later. Turns out he’d gotten pulled over for some minor traffic infraction in his hometown, and the warrant popped.

I was impressed at how efficient those guys are. From the point he got booked into jail until he showed up on our doorstep, he apparently didn’t even have time to change clothes. They drove him straight from jail to the airport for a cross-country redeye, straight from the airport to the command, and didn’t take the cuffs off until the duty signed for him.

As I recall, the big to-do prior to arrival was “how do we legally make sure the kid doesn’t run off again, without getting our pee-pees schwacked for unlawful confinement?” So we had a whole gameplan ready, from arrival to butt in barracks. Turned out to be mostly hypothetical, as the kid seemed more interested in taking his lumps and moving on. Also, on first introductions (with the Sailor at attention in sweats and a beard in front of his desk), the Skipper did a pretty good “I’m your CO and I’m royally pissed off” act, which probably helped.

Had to send him under escort to the NEX to get uniforms and toiletries, then it was mast and ADSEP processing pronto. Kid acted like a pretty good E-3 (or E-2) for the couple of weeks it took the OTH paperwork to get back from the Admiral. Too bad getting there took a Federal arrest warrant and being informed the CO had the right to court-martial him.

Not sure if the Navy did it, but the Army used to pay 100.00 for every soldier that you brought back. They would send out a list to the local PD and SO and if you found them, you executed the warrant and delivered them up, they gave you cash at the turn over. The post here is an MOS school, and they would have quite a few folks that got a little freedom and decided that they just would not go back.

Sometimes, this is what some kids need to get their lives on track. He has to bear the brunt of the long term implications, but maybe this was the impetus he needed to set himself up for a relatively “normal” life.

In P'Cola prior to API, got stashed at Maint A school as the LegalO. We had a whiteboard tracking all the UA's (usually steady somewhere between 5-10) and deserters (usually 1 or 2). Most UA's would come back at day 29 to avoid deserter status.

Had one kid that came back at day 29. At the the first available NJP session, CO gets done chewing his ass and SgtMaj sends him out in the hallway to await his fate. A few mins later, SgtMaj goes out to call him back in...he bolted again for another 29 days?

No MAs or MPs or whatever you guys call them? Rookie move. Plus, if you're trying to scare a kid straight, it just adds to the theater to have an MA or two onhand, explaining in professional cop-speak precisely how to report in, and how they'll get taken down if they make a move towards the CO. To be fair, I only had one MA do that (of his own volition before I could say anything), and even just standing nearby, I was like "dayuum . . ."

Some of this was fairly standard practice at my first command's Captain's Masts. Genuinely thought this was SOP throughout the Navy.

If there is an element of theater required at XOI or Mast, IMO, you're doing it wrong. It should be a very direct and transparent conversation between the XO/CO and the respondent. Points can be made and feelings expressed without humiliating the Sailor and embarrassing yourself.

As I'm sure you know, sometimes the theater is necessary because the command really doesn't have a card to play, but the Sailor may not know that. The theater doesn't have to be humiliating, just get a point across or communicate dissatisfaction.
