Congrats! Any reason why it took so long? Can you offer any advice so that others could shorten their process?

I got a message this week saying that there are not any DCOIC spots available and Ill have to do ODS. I turned my paperwork into the NOSC in FEB. I'll keep working it the best I can - to see if there is still a way in!

When I put my paper work in - in FEB there were like 20 seats available in SEP still. Snail mail I guess! ha
DCOIC is supposedly going away! FY20 Sailors are expected to attend ODS.

Congratulations man. I commissioned yesterday, really hoping they add some seats this summer/fall.

I was an enlisted drilling reservist when selected in a rate that is in high demand. I had to obtain a conditional release from enlistment before I could commission after selection. Took four signatures at several levels of command to let me commission. Four signatures in Navy time is months. Got roughly one a month and was moving along pretty well then things stalled because (well because it's the navy and that's what happens). Took another month or so, but with some help from my chain of command - we got the last signature moving again when it stalled and I'm in.

If you are enlisted - chime in with someone that has done the kind of conditional release that you need to do. They are not all the same and some of them make you jump through hoops. And if you get it wrong - you start over.

Word of advice to everyone: do not wait around on other people. Drive the process and follow-up.

A fellow JO was enlisted on mob somewhere hot and sandy. Got recalled and orders cut short (amended) to come back to CONUS abruptly and swear-in right before the end of FY (30 Sep).

Also, at some point they should start treating you as an ENS (Sel) and not PO1 (or whatever your rate). The CAPT presiding on the IWC DCO Professional Board selected you and it’s his/her recommendation that you become a commissioned officer.

I know of few guys that got pulled back form Mobs or ADT like that too - I was thinking it would move a lot more smoothly for me than it did because of those stories. But it wasn't quick and easy.

Had I been a BM or SK or something - I'd probably had commissioned back in October or November. Some releases are done at the NOSC level. Some go beyond that.

They really screen a couple a rates very closely before they let you go. There is a list of those rates out out there - mostly secret squirrel stuff. It's hard to recruit enlisted there and even harder to keep them. But as long as you don't owe the Navy anything - I don't think they can say no - but they make you chase the signatures and a lot of eyes look over the release from enlistment. I've even heard a few stories of enlisted being told you have to mob to x and then we will let you go when you get back.

I can see how it’d be that way if you signed an enlistment contract in exchange for $X0,000 cash bonus, then 6 mo. later became an ENS. But presumably those details are transparent to the IWC DCO Board, and they take it into account (quickly) when making selection decisions.
