CMV-22B Osprey Rollout

They’ll have to buy more if they want to use it for SAR. The det won’t have enough extra flight hours. Nor is VRM training for SAR.

MV-22s taxi on LHA/LHDs, so a carrier shouldn’t be different.

You need a mix of fixed wing and helo bubbas to start a V-22 community.

There is a little bit of sea spray at the surface, but it's pretty calm on the ride up. The aircraft itself is a very stable platform to hoist from and the downwash is largely mitigated by just hovering higher above the surface. Standard is 150' above water level but you have 250' of cable available. Definitely beats sitting in freezing water twice as long waiting for a slower helo to reach you.

Well, if I end up ever going back to sea it will likely be on a big deck amphib or carrier. Hopefully that never comes to pass but I've never been good at predicting the future.
 
Glad to hear they figured out the rescue swimmer thing by using a high hover (that's a very high hover).

When I was in primary in 1999, the scuttlebutt was that the downwash was too much for the swimmer, never mind any survivors. I suspect that was from some elementary testing using a typical helo height (60-80'). Funny too how many of us back then figured the Navy CV- might be online sometime towards the end of our first sea tours... hahahahaha how little we knew about a lot of things.

  • I'm not sure, but I think it has better endurance than a 60S.
  • It definitely has better range and can get to a survivor faster.
