Have any crews been forced to bail out of Hawkeyes in the past? Seems like 130's, the procedure is there but don't know of any that have actually had to do so.
 
RDML Lemmon, now serving as Commander of NAWC-AD, jumped out of one over the Med back in the 90s. All the crew got out safe.

It is. There's some debate over whether the Hornet ever actually shot it, or the wing burned off.

I was there that day, summer '91. Was joining my squadron on Forrestal about a month into cruise after finishing the rag. I was ferrying out to the ship from Incerlik on the H3 and was waiting to land during the launch cycle. the helo landed and i got out, and when I turned around to grab my stuff it was already taking off for the SAR.

a little while later, the helo was back on deck with Chet's crew. When i got my gear, it was all soaked from the rescued guys sitting on them.

after they bailed out, the E2 kept flying for a while. we were in the eastern med, and the E2 was flying straight for Syria

the nearest Hornet attempted to shoot a missile but apparently fucked it up. eventually he shot it down with guns - at least that was the story on the ship at the time. i forget his name, but that Hornet guy took endless shit about it for the rest of the cruise.

that was my first day in the Fleet

BTW, Zilbermans have the long ancestry line in Kiev, Ukranian capital, where they since XIX century maintained family medical and pharmacutical traditions. Another thread of that clan taught ethics and philosophy in university, quite hard job to get for a Jews then. This guy had all the reasons to restore one of these traditions in USA. Planning a medical career already having computer science degree - quite old Jewish way: each and every education contributes to old family business. Sadly he died earlier, but he was on a right track and he died as a man, a Jew with Slavic first name. My respect, Miroslav. RIP.
 
Dang, that's in my parents backyard. My kids enjoy watching the E2s practicing FCLP at Wallops, my parents backyard is due West of one of the runways.

I was wondering if the two guys in the back were also pilots and they were doing seat swaps for bouncing. They'd not be too high an altitude if they were up there for FCLPs.

Back in 1989 we went up there to do touch and goes one day, and on a roll and go following a sim single engine, a flock of tweetie birds took off in front of us and we plowed through them. Sounded like a hail storm. One of them strung his guts up the windshield wiper, and the smell of digested birds through the bleed air system did NOT smell like chicken. Aborted the takeoff.

Wallops was an austere place to break down.
