So the different test prep material I'm using seems to have different ideas on what the mechanical comprehension section is going to be like. Can anyone that's recently taken the test (or has knowledge of the test) tell me what to be expecting from that section? I want to make sure I'm studying the right things! Thanks! :)

Pulleys, mechanical advantage, inertia

Thanks! Any good example/practice tests that I should take a look at?
On page 450 the link to "Kyles Guide", "Sams guide", and a bunch of other resources are there for everything on the test. It also has a bunch of practice tests which is what I used to study for the test as well. Everything on there is spot on and to me was actually harder then the test so I felt very prepared on it. I took it earlier this year.

1. You don't need a GPA waiver as there is no min GPA for SNA and SNFO.

2. That score is low, 6's do get picked up but it is a rarer thing, you want at least a 7 to give yourself a decent chance, if your recruiter thinks a 6 is good he is either not a good recruiter or just blowing smoke to make you feel good.

The May board will not be a better chance for selection, the number of spots is divided by the number of boards and then they cap the applicants, so those that need to wait that scored a 5 or 6 will have time to retake and get 7's and 8's which means it could be more competitive.

Since you have time you can study and retake to give yourself a better shot.
I appreciate your opinion. I have decided I will be taking it again. I agree with your thought

Hey, I saw this on one go the study guides I have been using and wanted to know how to solve this problem.

You go 45 mph for 10 min, then go 55 mph for 30 min, and then go 70 mph for 20 min. How far did you travel?

You need to convert the minutes to hours then multiply the hours by the mph. Then add all three of them together. For example 55mph x .5 hrs (30 min) = 22.5 miles traveled. Do that for all of them.

Hi all, is the below picture how the flight simulator portion of the ASTB looks? Also, is there a timer at the top? This picture was found from an article in 2007.

That’s pretty accurate. I don’t believe there was a timer at the top. I’m pretty sure the game stopped when it learned your skill level. That picture also has the fuel/power gauge at the bottom and the emergency warnings so that’s what it’s like for the very last part of the test when it will give you emergency scenarios and you need to react while moving the throttle and joystick to follow those yellow planes.

Thanks big time, it helps to see what it's going to look like! For the emergency procedures part, do you basically have to move a knob/dial to whichever color is needed? There's a ton of info on what the stick and throttle part and listening part are like but not much on the emergencies part.

The instructions will give you 3 different problems that could arise while you are following the planes with your throttle and joystick. Write down the procedures to fix each issue when they’re given to you before starting. That will make it a lot easier. The instructions basically tell you to turn different knobs on the joystick and throttle to high, low or medium. For me, it was kinda hard to tell what low and high were so I had to look at the gauges on the lower right hand side of the screen as I moved the knob.

Good afternoon,

I took the ASTB today and would appreciate some feedback on my results. I got 63 9/8/8, looking to go SNA. I'm a private pilot and aerospace engineering student applying to OCS (for context). Do you think this is a competitive score?

that's an auto select brother you have nothing to worry about
