I personally don't think it would hurt to submit your packet for the next board and see if you get picked up. The board, as far as I am aware, prioritizes your ASTB score and GPA. If you don't get picked up, then I would recommend retesting. Not because your scores are bad but because you mentioned you're 19, so you don't want to keep reapplying to different boards if you keep getting passed on; that would only continue to bring you closer to the age limit.Hello,
A few months back, I went in blind and took my first ASTB and got a 5/3/5 57. Today, my second attempt landed me at 6/7/6 52. I studied for about a month and practiced whatever I could using the ASTB Prep App and the Gomez Drives, but I’m very disappointed in not having made 7/7/7 immediate select.
My recruiter says my scores are competitive to put in as a pilot, but the board (which I hear gets cancelled often, especially with the influx of those who want to become pilots) convenes in July and my result won’t be out by August.
Even with the risk of my third and final score being “worse”, I want to try taking it again in hopes of 7/7/7 or better.
With that said, I’m here to ask two things:
1. Should I put in my packet and hope for the best, or should I consider retaking ASTB for the final time? I’m 29, and I want to make it as a pilot ASAP, since my age is nearing the limit. I’m not sure what to do..
2. I’ve seen a lot of material that I don’t recall studying. For the ANIT, I’ve seen terms I haven’t come across in neither the Baron book, ASTB Prep, or Gomez Drives. I’ve also had questions that I don’t recall coming across while studying for the mechanical portion. In fact, I’ve hardly had any of the questions from the materials I’ve been studying. It seems I have to expand my resource repertoire.. does anybody have any more resources that I can use for my final take?
Also, during the Terrain portion, the computer started to freeze and the screen would only update every 5 seconds or so. The recruiter told me it’s a known issue, but it sucked a lot seeing the timer run down in chunks and having my selections be delayed by seconds twice, once when selecting the cardinal direction, and again when submitting the answer.
Thank you all in advance, and much respect for you all. I have no idea how you all got the score you all did!
Thank you for your insight. I am still torn between retaking the test again in June or waiting for the board. I may even consider going in as NFO with my score, as I hear that there's also an opportunity for NFO to transfer over to Pilot once you're in. There's a lot to consider, and I hope I make the best choice for me and my family.I personally don't think it would hurt to submit your packet for the next board and see if you get picked up. I also personally don't think you'd do worse if you took it again. At the very least, I would say you'd get the same score as you got on the second attempt. I believe you would do better since you're studying on top of what you already studied for. And yeah, unfortunately, there are things not mentioned in the gouges or the tens of study guides listed in this forum that are on the test, so it's always best to try and cover what others have mentioned have been on previous exams. You'd think the Navy would have some official up-to-date study guide, but I guess not (you gotta tip it to those that made it before the gouges were compiled.)
For the ANIT, if you haven't already, I would add these to your study. They have overlapping concepts, so don't feel overwhelmed: https://quizlet.com/class/24720001/materials

Lastly, it's unfortunate that you're dealing with technical issues on the exam. Every time I took it, I also had some technical issues; even in the terrain portion, as you mentioned. Whatever servers they use to administer the exam is simply not cutting it anymore. Try to get more reps in the prep app, so even if you are short on time on the exam, you'll be able to respond quickly because of the reps. Also a tip: use like a slit of paper or anything that had a straight edge, for the terrain portion. It'll help you find the direction in which the aircraft is traveling much faster. It definitely beats eyeballing it on the app.
I hope this helps.
Study while going for the next board, if you get denied test again.Thank you for your insight. I am still torn between retaking the test again in June or waiting for the board. Thank you for the additional resources. I will start going over them now, in case I choose to retake the test. It truly is a blessing to have all the people who took the time to compile all these study materials!
And I see, it's the server that's causing the technical issues.. I'll have to improve my proficiency in all aspects of the tests then to account for those unfortunate events.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond!
Go back a few pages on this thread. There are google drive links with everything you need! How do I locate all these files everyone keeps talking about to help me with taking the OAR?
Congratulations! Looks like you are IN! When did you get the good news?OAR: 56

PFAR - 8
FOFAR - 7
Bachelor Degree
GPA: 3.3
Community: Naval Aviation
Had first thoughts about becoming a pilot in the military and explored my options, after deciding between Air Force and Navy, I decided to go the Navy route. Met with a recruiter and gave myself 2.5 weeks to study for ASTB.
No prior military/aviation knowledge. Currently working a corproate america job in finacial services.
Concept study priority in order: (1.) Aviation & Nautical information (2.) Mechanical Concepts (3.) PBM (4.) Reading (did not study at all)
Math:
Was the most challenging for me, I dont recall running out of time, but I maybe finished with two miniues to spare. Test got VERY difficult in the end but I have been told that means everything is just fine. I have a great foundation in math from my highschool years and managed to retain most of the fundamental knowledge. I studied this as a 3/4 on level of priority. Printed every single math section test/worksheet from Kyle & Gomez drives and completed those in my 2nd week of study with finishing math practice tests 2-3 days before taking ASTB
Reading:
VERY BORING and slow. I did not study any reading materials , definitely went into blind but that is OKAY, this section should not be hard if you just carefully read the passage. Read aloud.
Mechanical:
Got kicked out of this section early, very basic concepts, I believe the drives prepared me the most for this BUT the ASTB prep app is GREAT for the note section. Utilized ASTB and drives heavilly for this section.
Aviation and Nautical Information:
Also believe I got kicked out early on this one too. Soley used ASTB prep for these questions and information. Was completing the tests on ASTB app 5-10 times daily and making sure I was getting 90% above with mostly hard questions. Was flicking through the flash cards during my commute and before bed. Also used the ANIT cram cards ... but not for new information, mostly just to have seen each term at leaast once
Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory (NATFI)
Lots of questions, answer truethgully - HONESTLY this section was the hardest in my opinion because sometimes some of the questions are NOTHING like your personality but you just have to go with your gut
Performance Based Measures Battery (PBM)
Stick & Throttle - I bought thex52 on amazon, luckily it was on sale so no brainer. I practiced for about 30 min a day using the ASTB prep app connected to my laptop. I was unable to figure out the Janzten one ... The tracking was very difficult for me but deep breaths help alot! Write down emergency procedures.
UAV - I think I was in the 1.8-2.5 react time. I didnt use the compass trick since the ASTB app is very similar and just practiced. I reccomend you use the app to train yourself how to be quick. It lowered my stress levels beacuse I actually knew what I was doing compared to trying to make sure I was lining my compass up correctly and turning it right.
Terrain - VERY HARD, I unfortunately thought I could pick this test up quickly but it was very hard. I crammed the ASTB app tests the last 3 days and morning of to get comfortable with it , please give yourself alot of time to prepare for this section if you want to score well, probably my most difficult.
Dichotic listening - Very easy, be quick and turn your head towards the target ear. Say the target ear numbers aloud to give your brain the confidence to choose correctly

Wish I scored alittle higher on my OAR, but I am going for SNA or NFO. I believe scores get me I-SEL but still have to go through board process so no guarantees.
Resources used to study:
- GOMEZ DRIVE
KYLE DRIVE
- I think I downloaded all of the practice tests and studied the things I got wrong
- TwoScoops' ASTB Prep app for the timed tests and mechanical concepts- worth the buy!
I have been told that boards are getting canceled and I also cant understand the NRC vs Fleet application due date. I havent been able to confirm with my recruiter on which board I will be on though ...
I have also seena. google spreadsheet of scores, does anyone have that? Would love to chat with people who are on the upcoming board in case we get to OCS together
A couple of weeks ago! Just waiting for an OCS date!Congratulations! Looks like you are IN! When did you get the good news?
If you're able to study and know you'll have a better chance of improving the second time around, then yeah I'd retakeHey all,
This is my first time posting here. I recently took the ASTB and got a 6/7/6 with a 53 OAR. My undergrad GPA is 3.29, but I attended optometry school and did not do well, which brings my GPA to a 2.75 cumulative if optometry school is included. I have the opportunity to retake the ASTB before the deadline to submit for the next board. This first test was mostly a blind test. I had been lightly studying the Barron’s and Mometrix books for about a month, and I only had a couple of days of really studying with other resources before taking it just to see what I would get. Should I retake the test to get a better scores to make up for the cumulative GPA or submit my current scores and cross my fingers?
My main study resources, aside from the books were as follows:
ASTB Prep App - mainly for practice questions and PBM
Jantzen Simulator
CRAM flashcards deck
Gomez Drive
MIT Ground School videos
How did you replicate the emergency procedures with the jantzen sim? Is it a setting in the game and is it useful? Thanks!Just curious how y'all think the mouse and keyboard controls transfer over for the jantzen sim? I'm looking at getting a stick on the cheaper side but not sure about dishing out so much for a whole HOTAS set unless it really is that big of a difference. I'm able to get both scores under 100 on mid difficulty right now with 9 out of 11 verbal cues correct currently, playing for a minute at a time
What I will say is that the math portion of the Gomez drive covered the majority of the material I saw on the math sections of the ASTB.The Gomez drive mechanical seems very elementary, how does it compare to the actual test for those who have taken it in the past few months?
It’s mostly the same. I’ve taken it 3 times and the questions stayed pretty consistent. Used the drives and The Organic Chemistry Tutor on YouTube to study. I struggled the most on math since I had to re-teach myself. The Gomez drive mechanical seems very elementary, how does it compare to the actual test for those who have taken it in the past few months?
