Hello! I am studying to be a NFO and I just want to make sure I am studying the correct materials and not wasting my time on things I don't need to know yet. My weakest area is in Math but my dominate area is in reading. Any suggestions on short cuts to find Math solutions would be great! I've been studying from a book I purchased called ASTB-E Study Guide Test Prep and PR active Questions for the ASTB-E.

This attachment is taken straight from Jacob's post on page 260. It should give you a good idea of what types of math problems you should expect on the test. I also used Barron's Military Flight Aptitude Tests which a lot of people recommend. I would also search around this thread for tips on how to do well on the aviation portion of the test, since you'll need that for NFO.

mechanical was easy and got a little hard

I would take it again depending on when you leave. 4/5 is the average compared to others who have taken it in the last 12 months. 8/9 is the best you can score. I suck at adding fractions so if you know of a helpful way to solve them that would be great.

If the fractions have the same denominator, you can just add the numerators and call it good. For example, 1/5 + 3/5 = 4/5.

If the denominators are different, you need to find the lowest common denominator (LCD) that fits the numbers, and multiply each fraction (numerator and denominator) by the number that will make the denominators the same. For example, lets use 1/5 + 1/6. Since the denominators are not the same, we need to find the LCD. The lowest number that 5 and 6 fit into evenly is 30, so that will be our new denominator. To make 5 (the first denominator) turn into 30, we need to multiple the fraction (numerator and denominator) by 6, so the first fraction turns into 6/30. The second fractions needs to be multiplied by 5, so it turns into 5/30. Now that we have the same denominator on both fractions, we can just add the numerators. 6/30 + 5/30 = 11/30.

That post is misleading. 4/5 is the "minimum", 8/9 are "competitive".
