For anyone reading the posts about fitness and getting worried, remember that the PFT scores we need aren't actually that bad. Assuming a male aged 20-24, you need the following scores at minimum:

For the IST (initial fitness test when you get to OCS) you need 50 curl-ups in 2 minutes, 42 push-ups in 2 minutes, and under 13:15 for the 1.5 mile run.
For the mid-PFT, which requires the highest scores, you need 58 curl-ups, 47 push-ups, and 12:00
To pass the out-PFT and graduate OCS you just need to get the same scores as on the IST. That seems silly to me, but whatever.

Basically you need to show up to OCS already in good shape, and you don't really have to improve that much.

This is true for individual physical tests, but you also have to be ready to PT hard daily. Scores arent that hard to achieve, but quality of life while in OCS will be much better if you're not getting reprimanded for slacking on daily grueling workouts.

You do have to PT hard daily, but as long as you're giving enough effort you can't get dropped or rolled for daily PT. It's the PFT scores where you have to worry about the numbers, and as I said, the numbers aren't too bad.

I will probably end up driving from Arkansas regardless, but (correct me if I’m wrong) I’ve heard there are benefits to driving your own car, such as not having to worry about the logistics of getting a bunch of gear back to your next destination.

I think that and you can store stuff in your car and also get access when you finally get liberty. Also gives you a way to get around before checking in. Several forums on here are pretty pro car.

Driving with a carpool would be awesome but coming from San Diego to RI means I would have to drive my own car because I doubt much people are coming from SD and idk if my 98 explorer would make it so I will most likely fly

You could find a cheaper flight to somewhere with someone driving maybe. Might be more hassle than it's worth but just an idea.

My boyfriend just graduated from OCS in October, so I'll share a bit about the car situation. You will park it and leave it there until 9th or 10th week liberty. The first weekend of liberty you get will only be on base. But you can go to your car. The following ones have restrictions but you can leave base. The chances of you going to car before then depends on your class team. He didn't get to go for quite some time. As far as liberty goes, it's a bit trickier. You have to have certain logistics set out, like a liberty buddy, and then you can go out and do whatever until when they tell you. While a car can be useful the last two weekends of OCS, I don't think you'll miss out if you don't have one. There are plenty of candidates with vehicles as well.

And as a heads up I've gotten from him. Knowing Appendix Bravo before hand will surely help you with RLP. You will have more time to focus on setting up your room properly and not cramming. It's a stressful event and you can make it better now by studying.

To chime in on the drive or not question. I'll be coming up from NJ and driving. :) If y'all have any more questions about OCS feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability. I've gotten quite a bit of info out of him.

Family and recruiter definitely said 100% pro car to OCS.
I also wouldn’t mind taking people’s stuff back, if it doesn’t fit well on a flight, to Pensacola (that’s assuming we all get selected of course, hypothetical here)

You'd have to factor in the likelyhood of OHARP after OCS as well.

from San Diego, but I’m in LA proper and haven’t thought about how I’m getting there. Might end up in a plane, but someone to carpool with would be great! Get to know your classmates before you get there, skip the crazy group intros!

Good To know man I will definitely keep you in mind if I decide to drive! Just need the confirmation to figure things out
