That "ancestor worship" thing is bullshit. I've flow both aircraft that can land at any weight (with an overweight landing inspection) and those that can't. You get trained in a new aircraft, you learn that aircraft and fly it accordingly.
This is pure speculation. The Captain made a call about what he thought was the safest course of action. The jet fuel that may have gotten on people, animals or buildings is not going to harm them (beyond slight skin irritation). This is once again an over-reactive press making mountains out of mole hills.
