Broadband is fairly unreliable in some areas (My house back in Meridian for example). Cellphones don't always work or have coverage. Landlines are still a "sure" bet most of the time.

As for $30-40 per month, a lot of the time they'll screw you with "packages" that you "must" choose from. Try telling them all you want is a BASIC phone line, nothing else. No caller ID, no call waiting, nothing. Usually it'll drive the cost down below $20.

You mean Meridian isn't the technological epicenter of the southeast?

It will depend on your connection(s). My parents are in Europe right now, and I Skype w/ them off and on. When their connection is good, there's maybe a slight echo. When their connection is bad, the call may drop out, but usually the buffer will keep the connection together enough. Sometimes, though, Skype will just dump and you have to call back. Definitely worth the price, though, especially when the alternative is trying to call a European cell phone and you get a 100% connection tax w/ pretty much every EU country.

I've never had a problem. Sometimes a slight echo or delay but it is a non-issue and has never made a call difficult to understand.
