Had a guy in my business class tonight tell me that his brother was sent packing from Marine ocs because of bad academics. Are academics really that hard or is this guy just not telling the truth about why he REALLY got kicked out?

Out of all the hard work and stress that goes into ocs, I've never once heard on this board that academics was one of the tough parts.

The academics are very easy, its an insult to call them academics; but its not hard to screw up on a test by not staying up one night to read what you need to read. I screwed up on the rifle practicle really bad (I thought my charging handle was broke....it wasn't) while not really academic it goes on your academic grade which there is quite a bit of.

There was one guy in my platoon who was an academic attrite. It happens, but the work isn't brain surgery. Staying awake during the class lectures is key. If you can do that, no problems.

The only thing is that the tests are worded funky. Also alot of guys would rush through tests because after your done you get the luxury of putting your head on the table and taking a little nap. The only naps authorized at OCS. Then while in a deep sleep you hear a gunny yell "everybody up!. Yeah thats nice.

He'll dazzle you with terms like "Code Red."
The only reason I think anyone could ever fail OCS for academics is if their overall time management were bad enough that they didn't have time to study the material AT ALL and were falling asleep in class. Most of the tests are pretty simple- the knowledge book gives you ELOs which are basically the bullet points you need to know, and then the test gives you multiple choice questions on the ELOs. My OSO gave me a knowledge book before I went which consisted of the answers to the ELOs for all the tests at OCS. If you get one of those and try to memorize it before you go, you'll be OK even if you do look like one of those drinking-bird dolls during a lecture the day after the night IMC. Another thing that helps is to write out the ELOs for an upcoming test on a sheet of paper and study those while you're waiting in the chow line. Academics are rarely a huge problem, but it helps to have that stuff down so you can focus on other stuff, plus the aforementioned nap during the test.

This is huge at OCS, sleep at night. It is not that hard, if you have an essay, then doing that should be the only reason your up till 2300, not even that long. Effective time management is one of the main keys to success at OCS. Thats my take on it anyways.

People get "sent packing" from OCS mostly from injuries, leadership failures and "failure to adapt." Go figure.

know your ELO's (Enabled Learning Objectives) the hardest part about the Academics is staying awake in class. Those of you who have been can verify this. There were some discrepancies on some of the tests when i was there but nothing that was too bad. The "hardest" test was the leadership test where you have to know some of the UCMJ articles and Code of Conduct. Other than that. . . take one canteen to the Bulkhead

This guy's brother said that he was unaware that you could study at night, thus he was never prepared for the next morning's test. Don't you think you would notice the rest of your fellow candidates staying up late and studying? I don't think I am going to buy his excuse. I'm gonna raise the BS flag on his story and say he got kicked out or he dropped on his own.
