Advanced atmosphere.

2 above 1 below does not equal 1 above. When it's all said and done and grades are computed (upon completion of stage) below's will bring your average down.

I concur with Handjive too on the "atmosphere." Being a Meridianite myself, as of June last year the IP's and sim instructors seemed more to help than hinder (except for 3 or so cases). However, I was an Intermediate/Advanced guy and that may have a lot to do with it.

However, I don't agree with him on choosing Kingsville over Meridian. The only bonus I can see as far as why it would be better than Meridian is the beach. But, there's plenty of fresh water in Meridian for you aqua types. My vote, would still be for Meridian (understand I've never been to Kingsville though, only have my info second hand).

Point taken, and I suppose the selection of the "above" items is not really "random" per se, but these days, though "headwork," "procedures," and "basic airwork" are still on the ATFs, it's very very rare to see anything more than net one above on the whole sheet. Sometimes if an IP wants to ding you or throw you a bone he may do it in one of those three.

Two above is generally viewed on our end as rocking the flight AND having a cool IP that would give you the 2 aboves. Some just won't do that, one is pretty much their limit unless they flew with God or something. I've heard of one guy getting a three above flight. So the focus seems to be on the net aboves rather than grading each item.
.

Yeah, this seemed to be the general practice in HT land w/ the old system, as well. Although maybe more IPs gave a net two above than what sounds like you guys get. Either way. Looks like the systems were pretty similar. And like you said, it just gives you the inital idea. The real value is the debrief and, to a lesser extent, the ATF. Sounds like you have a good outlook on the whole thing, anyway.

When it's all said and done and grades are computed (upon completion of stage) below's will bring your average down.

This was what I was trying to say, but you said it much better.

Okay, back to the topic at hand....

Hey handjive,

Are you K-rock guys flying charlies yet? If not, when is that change coming up?
Being in the digital cockpit is a huge plus for the meridian route. Velocity vector/E bracket/waypoint navigation. Nothing gets a HUD cripple's heart beating like the thought of flying off an actual gyro.
Chase that VSI bubba!

I just classed up here in K-rock and the staff of VT-21 said that though I will not be flying the C, they will be starting an all C class the beginning of May.

There are currently like 12 C models down here that instructors are using, and the sim guys have switched out one of our A sims and turned it into a C (waiting to be certified)

So... May.

Brian

p.s. from what i see down here... the atmosphere ROCKS!

No C models for studs yet. We've got enough jets, but as Brian said, it's a matter of waiting for the sims to come online.

Honestly, when I was filling out my selection sheet, I thought that getting a chance to fly a C would be a big deal. That's why most of the guys by me wanted to go to Meridian. It is definitely cool to have the Gucci gear and it must make life a little easier in the jet, but looking back now, I find it hard to make the decision based solely on that. As you mentioned, it is a plus, but I don't feel like I really missed out on anything big. It might take a few more flights for me to adjust in the RAG, but in my case, the adjustment to this jet was a bigger issue (I had enough trouble with the steam gauge cockpit). I'm sure there are some advantages to learning things the old school way too. No doubt this issue has been beat to death in other forums.

As I said before:

If you have additional requirements or priorities that make Meridian more attractive, go for it. But all things being equal, I think you will be much happier in Kingsville, especially if you are concerned about "atmosphere".
If you are a VV junky then you might have an "additional requirement or priority" to choose Meridian. Me... I still vote for K-Rock.

PS: I might even miss that gyro. <--famous last words.

The best thing about flying the -c is that it is a very good precursor to the hornet. Getting used to the VV in advanced is a good thing.
As for Meridian vs. Krock, most people don't spend that much time in Meridian since there are so many places you can drive to and still be inside the liberty limits (Atlanta, New Orleans used to be fun and of course P-cola),

SNA in Meridian
Handjive ...

Funny you should say that cause my buddy just called (he's in Kingsville) right now and he and my other buddy said that it is CRAZY in Kingsville right now. He said they are giving out downs like its in style. Go figure ... things change at the drop of a dime. I'm having a great time in Meridian right now ... but that can change at the drop of a dime too.
