Somewhat related question: What do people use as their permanent address when active duty? Do you go through the hassle of changing it on your license/bank statements/official stuff every couple years when you PCS?
Yes, you'll have to go through the headache of changing your address with pretty much everyone you're associated with. You can maintain residency in your home state, but you'll still have to change your address so you can receive the correspondence, bills, etc associated with your accounts. It can be a pain in ass, but it's something you eventually get pretty good at. My suggestion is to come up with a list (beforehand) of all the places you'll need to change your address. Student Loans, Credit Cards, Driver's License, Banks, Post Office and then do them all at once so you don't miss anything.
Or, you can just request electronic statements on all your accounts and then you never have to change anything ever again. Keep your state of legal residence in a state that gives you great tax benefits (FL comes to mind), and then the only thing you ever have to worry about is your DL renewal.

Electronic statements are nice. . .but statements aren't the only correspondence that is sent. I.E. new cards, tax documents, etc. It's still not a bad idea to change your addresses with the people you do business with, it's just a smart move. It only takes about an hour to do. Also, if you're a holder of a pilot certificate, don't forget to update that address ASAP.
Since Whiting is no longer an option are the transient barracks now the only Geo housing? I will be headed down this Summer and will either have to be Geo-Bachelor or split a place with some friends. FWIW, my wife and kids will be joining me later for SNA primary so I'm ASSUMING unaccompanied orders with follow on to Whiting. If all you have to pay for in Geo housing is cable/internet that sounds like the most cost effective method especially when paying a mortgage back home. I still have a couple months to plan this out but do you mind sending me the contact info for the individual who helped you with your Geo situation? Also, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

According to the Whiting Field - Housing - Unaccompanied Barracks website it sounds like you get to keep all of your BAH if approved to be a Geo-Bachelor. Is that correct or are there other fees (besides cable/internet) or will I receive a reduced rate of BAH? EM1, was it a pain in the ass to get approval or if there is room available are you pretty much approved? There is a number I will be calling this week to get some info from the Barracks personnel in Whiting but would like to hear from the "been there, done that" folks.
*Update: I called and talked to the Whiting Field housing folks and they informed me that flight school students get to keep their BAH and only pay for cable/internet (like EM1 mentioned). The lady said they always have rooms for flight school students and space available shouldn't be a worry. She also said everybody gets their own room and bathroom but share a common area with another student. She seemed very helpful and told me to email her my orders and an application and they will have a room waiting for me.
Yup, that's all correct info. Sorry I wasn't able to get on here sooner. I just got back on Sunday from 2 consecutive weekend cross country trips (Phoenix and New Orleans). Then, I just graduated Primary this morning. The rooms at NAS Pensacola are nicer, but you have about half the amount of space and storage room, as well as having to share a head with another person. Also, the rooms in Whiting have a small 2 burner stove (no oven though). We went half's on a rotisserie capable toaster oven. It worked well enough. BTW, I'm headed off to the land of the mighty E-6B. 
FWIW, I thought I'd add my experience to this thread for anyone who is considering geo-bach. Yes, you can stay on NASP and not have to commute from Whiting. I wish I could refer you to a specific instruction, but the best advice I can give you is to get in touch with the Command Master Chief and discuss with him your situation.
Hey guys, I'm a STA-21 OC and I will be finishing up this December. My wife will be staying here in VA while I am in flight school since she is a great job. I was talking with my advisor and no one seems to know how to get geo bachelor orders per say. Does anyone have any direction for me? I assume I would have to talk with my detailer prior to orders being issued?
Yes. Its true what this one says. I had orders cut to TRAWING FIVE at Whiting. I was the only married dude in class API class who knew where he was going while everyone was sweating the VANCE hook up. My advice is ask for advanced everything. I got all the travel pay, and dislocation allowance upfront so all I had to wait on was some TLE when I got to primary. Its better to have money sooner than later in my opinion. Wife and kids came with and we lived on base in Pensacola. (another post). Yes I got family separation even though I came home to the wife and kids every day don't try to make sense of it.
As for geo bachelor. My buddy who came to API six months ahead of me geo bached for a while. He said he got the run around and had to pay out of pocket for a hotel until people got their head out of their ass. Finally put him in the barracks at Whiting. You don't get geo bachelor orders. You have to go through and get it approved by your command once you get down here. Seek help from admin. You will get Bah for Pensacola whilst here and should not have to pay out of pocket for room just internet and such.
When I was at NORU they put me in the old BOQ across from the main Gateway building. Wow that was so long ago. Good luck!
