For context, I do planespotting and aviation photography. I recently was at my airport, KCOS/Peterson AFB and I saw some F/A-18Es. My pictures weren’t super detailed on the markings but I saw that they were both from VFA-24, which is pretty odd considering VFA-24 dissolved in the 90’s and never flew the F-18. The tail design and tank writing suggested it was from VFA-211 and it seems that’s the answer. If anyone was apart of VFA-211 or knows anything, why would these Super Hornets be marked as from a dissolved squadron, especially one that never flew the F-18? Is this to pay homage? Thank you for your time!

Would like to see your pics, but you should be aware that VFA-211 currently carries a paint scheme that is reminiscent of BOTH the old VF-24 (the "fast check" on the tail) and the current VFA-211 (red/white checkerboard scheme). So yeah...VFA-211 birds, no doubt.33404

Yeah, I’ll attach it. It’s very hard to make out the VFA-24 writing so I circled where it is. It had the fast check and it had a little bit of that checkerboard scheme, but no color.

Not the same thing, but there's been a couple of times where I checked in with different Navy towers and my MODEX didn't match my Callsign and they've clarified. Good on them, I guess.

I saw that but it didn’t explain, at least to me, why the squadron number would still be that of VFA-24.
Both VF-24 and VF-211 have shared the other’s squadron number at on time or another. 211 became 24 and a different 24 became a 211. To make it even more fun, VF-211 and VF-24 both flew F-14’s as part of CVW-9. Today the newest squadron patch (VFA) carries that symbolism and so do some of their aircraft. Another great example was VFA-106 marked up to remember VFA-15 (that was once VA-15).

I am pretty sure I was on the deployment when both were part of CVW-9
