The "three strikes" is a good rule of thumb for academics, but even that isn't set in stone.

Unless the rules have changed since July when I was in API, they are very serious about the Three Strikes policy. If you fail three exams in API, you can kiss your aviation career goodbye.

As Scoober pointed out, there are six major exams. But each test has a retest for those who fail. So on one exam--Aero II for example--you can notch two failures. In that case you would roll back and take the test with the next class to come up on it--assuming that you're not attrited by the PRB which is mandatory after two failures. If you fail the third time, you're done. You could also fail three separate tests once each, or any combination thereof...

As far as the Three Strikes rule...Don't fail three tests if you want to be in aviation.
