April 2014 SNA and NFO Board

For those that are age critical: any idea if being age critical will somehow rush the BC or if they are able to send out Fin Sel letters prior to the BC completing?

From my understanding, they will try to complete all necessary paperwork including the background investigation as soon as possible. I went in and had my finger prints taken prior to my Pro-Rec in order for them to be able to start the background as soon as possible following my Pro-Rec.

Not sure if background has to be complete prior to FINSEL?

Thanks so much for the heads up! I also completed my fingerprints while at MEPS - is there anything that has to be done on our ends to initiate the BC?

I do not think so. Your processor should get the background rolling as soon as the Pro-Rec comes in. As long as your OR, Processor and NRC are aware of your age critical status (which I am sure they are, but worth double checking), I do not think there is much we can do except pray they find an open slot. In your case, you have two possible classes that will graduate you in time, the July 20th and the Aug. 10th class.

Awesome, thanks so much for all the information, much appreciated! I'll be sure to check with my OR.

I had fingerprints done at MEPS as well, my OR had me sign 4 more papers of privacy release now that I was ProRec. My OR said he submitted it and BC will open now

Well, the general public seems to think so. They don't understand why we want to.

Also, I had a friend I hadn't talked in a whole congratulating me and asking some questions about what's next. She asked how long I planned on being in the Navy, I said I'm planning to do at least my 20 yrs. Her response: "Wow, that sucks. You can't even start a family till you're like 42 then. I see why military life can kind of suck now."

FACEPALM.

Coming back to this....

I had a nice, easy science job before applying for this, using my degree. It was boring, it was going nowhere, and it didn't matter that it paid all the bills and then some. This is the promising career. A 10 year commitment is nothing if you're out there being awesome in a cockpit. My dad had us kids 8 years into his 24 year aviator career, and it worked out just fine, still married. I'm very lucky to have the physical and mental traits needed to qualify for this sort of job, and getting to serve my country is just a bonus.

No prob, and agreed. My OR has been awesome. I'll coin the man if/when I have to OHARP, or buy him a bottle. Something for being great

Are you age critical or was your OR speaking on behalf of all of us? My OR didn't say when I would get my FINSEL but he acted like it would be soon which makes no sense when most guys wait at least 3 months for one. Also, it seems like FINSELS are issued for the previous board selects right after the next board convenes. That means we wouldn't get one until August which seems true since they typically issue it about a month before you leave thus the September class would be where most of us go.

I am out of NRD Nashville and my recruiter also gave a 3 week estimation time for a finsel letter. He seemed very confident it would be soon and gave a guess at an August OCS start. I am not age critical, but I do have open availability to ship because I am not a student.

So say you end up graduating OCS and API/Primary, do you just inform your company if you do not plan on coming back?
ya that's the plan. I have a high up corporate kind of job. Its a little bit more understandable in my position I think.

ya I was\am a lab supervisor for a radio pharmaceutical lab. Boring for someone with a masters. I needed more adventure and excitement. I guess it was all stepping stones to this point
