Arizona PRK Doctors

This was my point. A recruiter, most likely, will NOT endorse a doc to get PRK (since they will officially attempt to talk you out of gettin PRK) but they WILL put you in contact with other applicants who have gotten PRK to speak with them about their experience.
Recruiters are trying to talk people out of getting PRK? When I was looking for recommendations, the Navy docs would not offer any because of potential liability reasons.

If you are not opposed to travelling to San Diego, the Navy's former Head of Refractive Surgery (CAPT Steve Schallhorn), and the former Director of the Navy's Refractive Surgery Center in San Diego (CDR Mitch Brown) are both retired and in private practice together (http://www.clearvieweyes.com/).
Now thats the ticket. Sure San Diego is nearly three times as far as PHX, but hey, it's your eyes and career. If you have someone driving you to begin with, let them have a day and evening in San Diego for helping you out.

Wow. You guys are being really helpful! San Diego sounds like the way to go, but doesn't this thing take more than a day to do? I talked to one place in LA and they wanted me to be there for like a week!

Maybe I will also try the Medical Recruiter, too. Good idea Wink, thanks!

Well, just an update...I didn't hear from the guys in San Diego all week. I guess I'll call Monday.

I did find a doctor in LA, but he wants like 6 grand -- I've been reading around here that guys are paying between 3 and 4. Supposedly he is the official "Lakers" eye surgeon, maybe that explains it.

Also, I guess you guys can move this to the PRK forum if you want. I was retarded and not thinking when I posted it here.

Okay...

I've been scheduled for an exam to see if I qualify on May 7 in San Diego. Provided that I do, surgery will be on May 9th with follow-ups on the 10th and 12th, at which point they said they'll help me find a doctor here in AZ to do the rest of the follow-ups.

Is this with Dr. (CAPT) Schallhorn?

Hmm, I dunno. I just talked to the Secretary. Should I call back and specify?

Okay, the secretary said it's with Dr. Feldman. She said they weren't sure "when Dr. Schallhorn was coming back."

........?

I have heard good things about Dr. Feldman. She has been doing surgery in San Diego for many years. Dr. Schallhorn joined her practice after he retired last year. That said, I am sure that you can find doctors as capable as Dr. Feldman closer to home. From my perspective, the main advantage of going to San Diego is to have the surgery done by the guy who started the Navy's PRK program and who basically wrote the policy. I don't know what you timeline looks like, but if it were me, I would call them back, explain the situation, and tell them you want to see Dr. Schallhorn.

Well, I graduate in the fall. So I'd prefer to get this done ASAP because of the whole thing where you have to sit on your hands for 3-6 months postop. That means I'd be able to submit my package sometime during the summer.

Oooh, surgery a week from Friday! I want to say that I can't wait, but I've read too many accounts about "sand in your eyes" a few days postop. Oh well, I can't complain too much. I will be in San Diego with a pretty girl driving me around while I'm blind....hmmmm

So the question is, anybody know any NICE restaurants down there we can go to?

Nice, you mean fancy or just all around good? Try Point Loma Seafoods. It is a walk in sit outside kind of place. All the seafood is very fresh, some right of the boat local caught. There is a web sight with the location. After eating take a drive up Point Loma past the national cemetery and WWII coast artillery bunkers. There is a great view of North Island the the Sub Base right below. Then drive down the other side of Point Loma to the tide pools and light house. Great food, beautiful historic drive, nice couple hours.

I second Point Loma's Seafood, when I was at the ASW base right down the street, I went down there periodically. There was also a competing seafood place right across the plaza from it, I can't remember the name, but it was also equally excellent.

Who did you decide to have the surgery with?

By "nice," I meant either of the two options you provided. Sounds like a good time, Wink! I think we'll definitely give that a go.

I decided to just stick with Dr. Feldman. I figure I can unleash my engineering prowess on her and see if she knows what she's doing. I'll definitely be making sure they're measuring my pupils correctly, among other things.

Okay, so aside from Point Loma's Seafoods, where else can we go? What Wink described really sounds great, but I don't imagine doing that more than once or twice this trip, eh? We've got almost a week to kill down there...
