Actually looking at the Delta hiring page:
FAA Requirements

• FAA commercial fixed-wing pilot license with an instrument rating.
• Current FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
• Meets ALL minimum FAA ATP requirements including successful completion of the ATP written exam.

It says nothing about having an ATP license...

It's an unwritten requirement.

The guys who have it will be chosen over those who do not.

I just did the ATP and 737 NG type rating through CPT and I would highly recommend it. 10 days includes 3 days of ground school, 6 sims, oral exam then checkride. $9,500, all of which is covered by post 9/11 GI Bill. Free rooms right next to the sim building, the old BOQ rooms on old Castle AFB in Atwater, Ca. Not the best rooms, but free!!

As I said, I am kicking myself for not taking the written two years ago but it wasn't even on my radar (Navy for life!) I will probably head over to Downtown Aviation early next year time frame. I will be really kicking myself if the ATP does not become a requirement for the majors in the next couple of years.

It is done with written in hand.

Back in the day most military guys came in without an ATP, (many hired with less than the 1500 hr requirement) but the FE written was required and ATP written preferred. Most civ guys had the ATP ticket. It is hard to believe, at this point, that any major airline would provide instruction for the ATP written, especially since the new requirement includes sim time. As implied, market forces may change that. As to the practical, they have been providing that for some time. I am not even sure there is anything different from a typical airline sim check and the ATP practical requirements. At AA, they are giving all the FOs full up type ratings. As you need an ATP for a type rating, then you may get the ATP practical done without even knowing it.

CPT has caught my eye. Did the 737 type rating include the ATP practical?

I'm also still trying to understand how much they reduce your remaining GI Bill benefits after using part of it to cover the ATP.

Well after a painful drawn out process, I finally got my ATP through Sanders Aviation. They were awesome and Gordo is the man. The check ride was a no stress environment.

Interesting news though is that Delta is taking some space in Sander’s hangar to run CTP there in Alabama and combine it up to knock out the ATP practical. That will be the way to go. Look for it late summer/fall timeframe.
