Automobile to Newport?

I drove and there was no benefit to having my truck. Going on liberty you will probably want to have a few drinks so will take a cab anyway. You're not going to go that far away from base so a cab won't cost much at all. There's really no reason to hide a bunch of stuff in your car. It's not necessary or practical. You can take your phone with you and it just gets locked up until week 9.

It was actually an inconvenience for me. They made us move our vehicles around several times between different parking lots, once the day before RLP. I think it took about 2 hours due to the distance of where we parked and the candios having to herd us like cattle and escort us all over. I really could have used that time better.

Reading through this thread it seems a bit outdated. Y recruiter has explained to me that the mileage pay will be about .58. Per dime depends on where you are at. I a planning on driving from Austin texas to Ocs for 8 November 2015 class. Seconds thoughts due to weather damage.

I am driving and will end up finishing right before Christmas (assuming I don't roll). I am bringing a car cover with me to fight the weather damage.

I'm also gonna recommend putting Line-X or Rustoleum on the bottom of your cars, especially new ones, whether you're bringing it to Newport or not. After only two years of my truck being in Navy towns, there's tons of rust on the bottom, albeit it just looks like surface rust (for now).

Dinitrol av8, what we used as a corrosion preventative when I worked on 737s. Easy to apply and I always thought about it for undercarriage care for cars/trucks.

Per Diem is a flat while in transit which includes a basic meal and lodging rate. Driving is $.23 / mile for a PCS. Not sure of your category (http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/otherratesMile.cfm)

What he said. The only way anyone is gonna know how long the trip took is from the paperwork you fill out when you get there. If you write three days, you get three days' per diem. If you write eight, you get eight. Of course, if you really take eight days to make the trip, you have to pay for eight nights in a hotel.

...unless you get creative.
I reported to OCS 1Mar. I drove from TN to Newport. 1300 miles. I did it in two days and they gave me 3 days of travel pay. I was told it was based off the mileage not the time it takes to travel. Still have to pay for mileage and gas regardless of time.

Hey Everyone, I read over this thread and had a few specific questions. To add detail: I will be attending OCS starting Jan 3rd. I will then go to Supply School after... So, 9(ish) months in Newport area.

I currently don't have a car, but am considering buying/leasing a new vehicle. Any thoughts about this for OCS? Should I wait, fly to OCS, and just get a vehicle after OCS?

Any input, especially winter related and about that thought, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I personally wouldn't buy a car before OCS, because anything can happen that would lead to an unfortunate case where you would have to drop from the program. I would wait until after. Unless, you want something else to keep you motivated pressing on, lol.

Wait until after OCS, and even then, beware...if your first ship assignment after Supply School is in Japan, you can't bring your car without paying 5-6k+ to reconfigure it to Japanese standards! I sold my car and am buying one over there.

Just re-registered my car and I have a temporary 10-day registration while I wait in the mail for my actual registration. Will my temporary registration be sufficient to check in? won't have my registration till after sunday.

Maybe Japan is different, but in Europe you weren't required to meet their standards. Can anyone stationed in Japan confirm?

You CANNOT ship your car to Japan. I am aware there are exceptions but they are far and few between and not worth the trouble.
