I didn't know it was that routine. I was thinking of Cujo, but it's been a couple of years now.

We can hover longer than that. 5 Minutes max. It depends on OAT/weight/etc.

I watched you guys "CQ" (lol) on GW. Here is my guess for that 5 min hover:

OAT: <1 C
Weight: OEW + 1K fuel

fuckers had to refuel/re-water (we thought they were jacking us) every 2nd pass. Even the Hornet guys were laughing at the lack of gas.

Well then, your guess would be way off, then wouldn't it?

At 15C, your average Harrier can land with about a 3.5D/4.5W. Our normal fuel abeam (min) is a 1.2, plus whatever Bingo fuel is needed from the ship.

Our fuel and water for CQ is a bit backwards from what you guys do. We need to land light enough to hover. We back that off a bit for safety margin, so we'll end up getting about 2-5 passes per bag (filled to about 4.5 during CQ), depending on circumstances.

Hornet guys can laugh all they want at the boat. Tank for tank we'll bury them in on station time every day of the week. What you constantly hear about is a double bubble Hornet outlasting a slick Harrier by about 15 minutes.

We definitely can't outlast the E-2 unrefueled, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make not to be gay.

So I was going to make the usual True Lies reference about hovering with accompanying picture when I came across some movie trivia.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111503/trivia

According to that, Arnold learned how to take off and land a Harrier for the climax. It also mentions that they had purchased about 50 hrs worth of flight time, so maybe its possible. That flight time probably includes the transit to and from base for three harriers so the chances that he learned to operate a Harrier seem very slim to me. Can anyone confirm or deny what I think to be wild BS?

Um, no.

Read the next line:

A full scale model of a Harrier was built for all close shots of Schwarzenegger flying the plane; it was puppeteered from a crane on a nearby building which was painted out with CGI. (As the Harrier lands in the street, dust and debris stirred up by its jetblast is all done in CGI; the CGI blast swirls up a CGI piece of paper which is sucked into the Harrier's CGI air compressor fan)

To this day, I say that James Cameron had the Harrier hit the police car for no other reason than to show everyone that he could, and make it look "real."

If you're suggesting that Arnold actually flew and landed the Harrier in the movie, then I can assure you that that never happenned. He got some sim time and a few basic pointers from Marine Harrier pilots before the movie. That's it.

That makes way more sense. I can see that being easily twisted by an unknowing outsider to form the myth. That was nice that they let him play in the sim for a bit.

Like it's been said already, it's similar to the CBTs we had in the RAG and are available on av8b.com, but not the same. It always amazed me at how high-speed the graphics and interfaces where for a lot of those things that went "underutilized" for the scale and $ invested.
