Can anyone out there independently confirm the changes Jai5w4 posted?

This sounds pretty different than the old standards. Not only the elimination of the ASTB but also counting the PFA for 10%...

Until someone who isn't a mid says this is the real deal, I call bull****. I'll take it back if I'm wrong.:)

Ya I was scared to take the ASTB for the second time cause i got a 5 /5 /5 53 the first time and when I saw Jai5w4 post I was like ok well i passed so maybe thats good enough...did some research and i think that that info is false he might be confusing it with how the AIRFORCE does there's.... On the bright side i took the ASTB again and got a 7 /8 /7 55 so I am happy now and hope they do use the ASTB scores!

Yea, can somebody confirm if that thread about midshipman only having to pass the ASTB is valid or not? So far no one has backed it up....

That's funny...That's what I posted a few parsecs ago:

http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showpost.php?p=68225&postcount=3

As for the rest of you WORRY WARTS, STOP worrying...a few things will always be certain:
1. You will have to take some type of placement test (Navy/MC/USCG = ASTB).
2. The score will always be used as part of the selection process (No pass = no wings).
3. Your performance (+/- Physical & +/- Mental) will help/hurt your chances (PFA/PFT Scores, Cumulative GPA, etc).
4. Hard work, both physical and mental, will always pay off.

So, study hard, do well and have fun...

NROTC Selection Board and your application

All,

I've just finished serving as a recorder on the NROTC selection board. That's where 9 O-5s and O-6s (and me as a go-fer) go thorugh ~450-500 applications every month for about 7-8 months.

Amazing process. If you are selected, congrats. Most of you are better than I was when I selected. If you are not, please be aware that it is not because you weren't scrutinized. The process, is damn near flawless. There is a lot of considerations and the smallest thing can really jam you/help you...So, needless to say, the more information, presented in an accurate and concise way, the better.

I will be happy to answer PMs about "what do you think I should do with..." but will include just a few things I saw...

**Technical majors. HUGE point getter as long as you do well in math/science and they are under the quality of APs/IBs (or whatever is highest offered at your school ----MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR COUNSELOR INCLUDE "Completed highest offered math course, etc" IN HIS/HER STATEMENT).

**Leadership. Break out in whatever you do. If you do boy scouts, take it to the Eagle level. If you do CAP/JROTC, Pick up a billet. Run for class office, etc. There were no extra credit points offered for being in 30 clubs but not leading in them. There were, however, smaller points awarded for these "non-athletic" events.

**Physical Fitness. Get in a sport and do it starting no later than 11th grade. It doesn't matter if you are a stud or not. You'll get the leadership points if you pick up captain, but stronger points were awarded just for participating. If you are out of height-weight standards...you'll be deducted BIG TIME if you're not documented as participating in physical activities.

**Grades. Don't get below a C and you'll be fine, as long as you don't have more than 2-3 Cs. Ds/Fs REALLY drag down the score.

**Arrests/Law troubles. IF YOU DON'T INCLUDE THAT YOU'VE LEARNED SOMETHING FROM IT ... or, if you are a repeat offender, you're starting out bad. This is one of the first things the board looks at. There is DEFINITLY NOT a 0 defect policy (I was shocked some of the selects, but the board memebers understand you're freakin' going to make mistakes when you're young...BUT, realize that it's a big deal, learn from it and don't EVER do it again.)

**PERSONAL STATEMENTS. BIG one here. TAKE YOUR TIME and ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION! SO MANY applicants had 700+ SAT VERBALS and wrote like $hit, or had a 1 sentence answer. ELABORATE. MAke it look like you give a damn and took some time to read it, re-read it and spell check it. It's an electronic application people...you have spelling errors and the board will probably dock you big time...Relate personal, ACTUAL events that influenced your decision to apply for NROTC. Also, you can have people look it over, but remember they are YOUR statements. Don't trust others to edit content, because the board will see right through that crap.

Most of the stuff is common sense...so use some.

I hope this helps a little. Keep fighting the good flight and we'll see you in the fleet.

Sticky, anyone? This is great stuff. I wish I'd known things like this when I was applying to ROTC--thanks, Chunks.

Great post, thanks. One question: are there two different selection boards for college programmers trying to pick up a scholly? If so, would you be able to elaborate on that selection process?

Making Recruiting Great Again
I kinda laughed when I read this. Perhaps if I did better on my essays I could have gotten a scholarship right away. Oh well, I eventually earned my scholarship and on my way to commissioning.

Nursing and CPs

I forgot to post that Nursing is selected with the same board. The process is the same, with one major difference.

Instead of "Technical Potential," they rate you on "Nursing potential." Meaning that you're doing things such as candy-stripeing, EMT, CPR course instructor, etc. and that you are doing Anat. and Phys., AP Chem, Intro to Organic Chem, AP Biology, etc. if your high school offers it. IF IT DOESN'T, MAKE SURE YOUR COUNSELLORS SAY "This is the highest science that Bill Smith could take."

****Biggest way to kill your chance of being a Nurse??? Say you're going to "use Nursing as a stepping stone/gain experience to eventually be a doctor."**** The Board quickly killed these apps. Also realize that YOU HAVE TO MAJOR IN NURSING. They make you sign a letter saying so. So it'll limit you as to what school you can graduate from.

They DO NOT, give pluses to guys enrolling for the program...they always want Murses, but they don't give extra points, just as they don't give extra points for race.

As for College programmers, it is selected seperately. You are not boarded. If your unit CO recommends you (in accordance with his instructions from CNET) and the unit has "scholarship slots availible" (drops or kick-outs) than you're in.

Keep up the good fight.

All,

I will be happy to answer PMs about "what do you think I should do with..." but will include just a few things I saw...

What do you think I should do with...
a school that refuses to rank me? I actually have two problems. First is that my high school doesn't do rankings at all. I guess they don't believe in class rankings. I can't get a ranking and my counselor is unwilling (or is not allowed) to guess at my ranking. Secondly, my school has a policy of only giving counselor recommendations, which accompany the transcripts on their own forms and not on forms provided by colleges (or by the NROTC scholarship program). I tried to fight it earlier with my college apps, but my guidance counselor would tell me to just throw away the forms. She'll use the high school's own. So I guess the NROTC scholarship program will get a transcript with a counselor's recommendation form which is not the one provided by the Navy and without any class rankings. :(

Will both of these things be a problem for me to get reviewed by the selection board? I've mentioned this in email to my recruiter, but maybe he doesn't even know if this will be a problem, because I haven't gotten an anwer yet.

Also, what is done with the Strong Interest Inventories you are required to complete? How are they scored by the board?

I talked to an NROTC guy the other day and asked him his opinion of PLC. He said that if I wanted to go into Aviation I would have a better shot if I went Navy. Is he just trying to get me to go NROTC over PLC, or is there some merit to what he said?
