I think the OP was asking more about whether you're issued your own personal weapon, as in here, Ensign, this is your pistol; there are many like it, but this one is yours. Answer is no, and the only time you'll carry one is if you're Boat or Boarding Officer or OOD Inport. And even then, you carry it for the duration of your watch/boarding, then hand it off to your relief or return it to the gunner's mates.

If you really want one to call your own, you might be able to score a pretty blue one...

Don't listen to these guys. Yes, you get issued your firearm at OCS to take to the fleet. Make sure and ask about the armory after your first week, AND USE YOUR CHAIN OF COMMAND. Class President to Drill Instructor, then your class Chief.

Basic means they were trained within the lifelines of the ship. The main accomplishment for them was getting pepper spray to the face.

Advanced is done by Blackwater instructors over on the East Coast, they teach basic "tactical movement."

Most people that do advanced also end up doing VBSS as well.

Yeah ... really ... I don't know why all the hate & discontent re: Black Shoes ...

My Black Shoe experience is limited, granted ... two MIDN cruises, 3 FLEET cruises, OOD underway qual ... etc., etc. .... but all my experiences were "overall positive" on an individual basis (personal & professional associations along the way with guys representing E-2 to CO/XO and everything in between) and not really all that much different from the gents I came across in the various & sundry squadrons I inhabited. There are great guys and hard-chargers in squadrons and on ships ... and a whole bunch of average, decent guys ... and a few losers in each and EVERY community, each and EVERY ship, and each and EVERY squadron.

Believe it.

I decided one thing a long, long time ago: if I couldn't make it in Naval Aviation -- my first love & desire -- I'd have ZERO "personal problems" going Black Shoe OR USMC Grunt and making it a viable career. That's like ... zero.

I'd rather be a Black Shoe standing on the bridge or quarterdeck than an "executive" sitting in ANY office in the world that immediately comes to mind.

The WORST thing about Black Shoes --- they're not Naval Aviators.

But that's not a killer; it's the luck of the draw; another one of the breaks ... in this case, it's life. It's just not Naval Aviation ...

I hear that the SWO's have caught wind of this discussion and decided that they do in fact want to be issued a side arm. They did not have a lot of firearms knowledge, so the just got some pictures together and voted on the one that would be most useful to them. This is what they came up with:

Ok so we do get issued personal weapons? There were at least 5 completely contradictory posts there.

By the empirical method of post-averaging, it appears that I get issued and qualify on a sidearm, then it is mine, and I just don't carry it around with me while underway. Unless I'm on VBSS, in which case I pack it and some more serious heat.

Slightly unsure, but I want a gun so I'm bringing a super-soaker just in case.
