To be honest...I'm getting sick of this, but I understand why it happens.

Tonight, for about the 4th time at a bar, I've been standing around, some guy has been hitting on one of my girl friends who's a total sketch ball, claiming to be in the Army or Marines.

To relieve the awkwardness, my girl friend says, oh...my friend is going into the military too.

Then the conversation goes something like this:

Me: What do you do?
Guy: I'm an Army sniper. Just got back from Iraq. What do you do, man?
Me: Sniper!? On nice! That's something I've always wanted to do! I just swore in to the Navy. I'm pumped about it.
Guy: Navy? You're a p----. Eat s---, pal. You're trying to claim military benefits? That's a f---ing joke.

Any comment on this? Because it's happened to me several times, yet I've never seen this awkward situation discussed on Airwarriors.com.

As difficult a prospect as this might be for you to fathom, maybe it's just you.

Never happened to you before, Brett? I'll just be casually hanging out at a bar and this happens to me. I've only been "in" for about 2 months and it's already happened a few times.

Bazing!

Keep in mind, just say this out loud and you will feel better, "He's in the Army."

Problem solved.

People don't tend to fvck with me. Not because I'm some huge scary guy, but because I don't attract negative attention. A-holes like the one you've described can smell fear. If it happens again, just ignore them.

I'm in the same boat. I hate causing shit. I don't say anything to random guys at bars. It's only happened a few times when one of my friends has been like, "He's gonna be a Navy guy...etc."

Then the typical insults arrive.

Perhaps thats a big part of the problem- you going around telling people you are "in"... There is a huge difference between you getting paid an E-3 salary to complete your degree (without ever having to so much as put on a uniform) to those out there who have actually been serving in the fleet in a time of war for the last several years.

I'm glad you commented on that, because I did not realize it was open to that interpretation. That's why I put "in" in quotation marks. I've never said I have done anything to anybody.

It's been my friends who have said it (without my asking them to do it). And many times that they have, it has backfired.

I hear what you're saying CaptainRon, I've had many of the same discussions with gents before; some being with friends, others with randoms. The way I have it figured from the discussions I've had with others:
Air Force: Think of themselves as generally smarter than everybody else because they signed up for something they consider the best deal out there while everybody else chose a much harder route for the exact same pay. Generally don't rib anybody about their service because, well, they're the chair force and they don't have all that much to brag about.
Marines: Think of themselves as the best (most squared away) service of them all (with all other branches being "nasty"). Highest degree of pride in service which usually lasts a lifetime (as demonstrated by the huge EGA or USMC tattoo on their shoulder). These guys will definitely clown on sailors ("hey squid...") until you bring up their intelligence level (What do you get when you cross a gorilla and a marine? A retarded gorilla....) Or.... you could also bring up their low standards in terms of sleeping with women. I have seen some absolutely fugly girls that nobody in the bar wants to even make eye contact with and some Marine somehow thinks he's striking it rich by taking her home.
Army: Huge chip on their shoulder because they are just disgusting. They'll accept anybody with a pulse and an equivalent IQ of a middle schooler. They share many of the same jobs as the Marines (i.e. grunts, artillery, etc....), they're just not as good at their jobs as the Marines are.
ARMY=Aren't Ready to be a Marine Yet. As such, knowing that they're playing second fiddle to the Marines, most soldiers will lash out at any other service as pussies, just to make themselves feel a little better. While I don't have any statistics to back it up, I'd bet that if you'd compare the fitness levels of the average sailor to the average soldier, it would be pretty close to even.

I am definitely stereotyping all of the branches, all stereotypes are founded in some truth.

I'm sure many will disagree with what I'm saying and that's fine. This is just how it seems to me after many a conversations with our brothers in arms.
