I hear what you're saying CaptainRon, I've had many of the same discussions with gents before; some being with friends, others with randoms. The way I have it figured from the discussions I've had with others:
Air Force: Think of themselves as generally smarter than everybody else because they signed up for something they consider the best deal out there while everybody else chose a much harder route for the exact same pay. Generally don't rib anybody about their service because, well, they're the chair force and they don't have all that much to brag about.
Marines: Think of themselves as the best (most squared away) service of them all (with all other branches being "nasty"). Highest degree of pride in service which usually lasts a lifetime (as demonstrated by the huge EGA or USMC tattoo on their shoulder). These guys will definitely clown on sailors ("hey squid...") until you bring up their intelligence level (What do you get when you cross a gorilla and a marine? A retarded gorilla....) Or.... you could also bring up their low standards in terms of sleeping with women. I have some absolutely fugly girls that nobody in the bar wants to even make eye contact with and some Marine somehow thinks he's striking it rich by taking her home.
Army: Huge chip on their shoulder because they are just disgusting. They'll accept anybody with a pulse and an equivalent IQ of a middle schooler. They share many of the same jobs as the Marines (i.e. grunts, artillery, etc....), they're just not as good at their jobs as the Marines are.
ARMY=Aren't Ready to be a Marine Yet. As such, knowing that they're playing second fiddle to the Marines, most soldiers will lash out at any other service as pussies, just to make themselves feel a little better. While I don't have any statistics to back it up, I'd bet that if you'd compare the fitness levels of the average sailor to the average soldier, it would be pretty close to even.

I am definitely stereotyping all of the branches, all stereotypes are founded in some truth.

I'm sure many will disagree with what I'm saying and that's fine. This is just how it seems to me after many a conversations with our brothers in arms.

Did you really feel you were contributing something of worth with this post? What makes you any different than the "Army sniper"?

Jesus... talking to you is like trying to push a rope up a hill.

Geez...take it easy.

CR...just tell the guy, "Welcome back. Thanks for serving. I hope to be out there myself someday. I know I've got a ways to go." Let the awkward silence linger, then go back to your own conversation.

Real heroes usually don't offer up stories of their greatness unsolicited at a bar. There are always exceptions, so I wouldn't try to uncover a faker myself (especially with your limited experience), but take Mr. Hero with a grain of salt.

In bars, every drunk buttw!pe who used to be in the Army was a Ranger and every ex-Marine seems to be Recon. All of them were friggin' clerks with OTH or medical discharges.

Phrogdriver gives the best advice.
By the way, opting for naval aviation takes you out of the pussy column, in my opinion. I guess todays military does not allow you the luxury of asking him outside.

I think you guys are right about this guy's character.

One of the only things he said to me was that he starts trying to talk to girls at bars, and then he blows it because he thinks about all the guys he's killed. Terrific.

CaptainRon, I think you were right when you once told me (via PM) that you don't start threads for certain reasons. To be honest, this is a ridiculous thread. Granted I don't have to read them or at least respond after I read it but this thread has no potential to go anywhere but down. This story is just stupid.
