Spots 3 and 4 were the only spots qualified to land on when we escorted her into Boston this past Feb... the rest of the deck was uber-rusty and half the spaces were chained shut, to say nothing of the lack of heat (and subsequent flooding once they "fixed" the steam). She's been written off for a long while. She's looking pretty rough right now, she's over in Norfolk moored. Pretty stripped down and looking rusty. I hope they do something with her.

When they closed Philly shipyard in 95, JFK had to be TOWED back to Florida because the work was incomplete.
I don't doubt that they were working their ass off, especially the night of the flooding... but damn, my guys were in 40 degree berthing for the entire time we were in Boston... wtf?AirLant was our ISIC for the last two years and didn't want to spend one dime on the ship. The crew was "down" to 1800 so we had to closeout spaces. The deck was rusty because AirLant didn't want to pay for the resurfacing of the non-skid. Stop and look at it next time, resurfacing is a constant evolution. Part of the flight deck is always being stripped and resurfaced (unless you are on deployment). So, we had to get permission to paint the deck (a major no-no) and keep the spots on the angle bare and thus certified for flight.
The flooding was in one room, granted it was 18 inches, but contained quickly.
You're right, she was written off by Big Navy, but the crew stroked pretty hard to keep it up.
Not true. I was on the JFK from 94-98 and we went underway on our own power we homported from Philly to Mayport.. The time in Philly really did screw things up. All the good contractors left for better jobs once they heard the shipyard was closing. Most of the people who stayed were either close to retiring or just didn't really give a shit.

Hozer, you won't be surprised that I am involved in the Save the JFK effort. Gaining real momentum and the web site (www.savethejfk.com) is now open and local/national media are paying attention.
Give me a yell to discuss.
