This may help.

I wonder if this post will receive the same treatment given to the "how to get jets" posts. Anyway, I just wanted to say that you could be like the majority of the folks out of my selecting class who wanted P-3's and all ended up with helos. This is after having heard countless studs talk about how they would rather shoot themselves than fly P-3's. The trend just varies so much week to week that there is no trend. Do your best, put down what you want and you just might get it.......or you might not.

As with wanting any platform, do the best you can. Thinking you want P-3s or helos in primary will give you the chance to talk to different IPs from those communities since the primary VTs are loaded with them compared to Jet guys. No matter what you want you will run into people who will tell you to stay away from different communities for whatever reason. If after talking to them you decide you still want P-3s (or whatever other community) let people know... IPs, CO/XO if you fly with them and they ask you, and your onwing if they ask what you want a recommendation for. Put in your dream sheet and see what the Navy decides they want you to do. You can wish and hope for a community all you want, but remember you are at the whim of the Needs of the Navy for the given week you select.

WHAAAAAAT???:D

In seriousness...Zippy gives good advice. Just fly as well as you can. Put in for what you want. See if you get it. There isn't magic, just hard work and luck.

Above all, DO NOT try to game the system. It will only bite you in the ass and alienate the COC and your instructors.

Seriously, how do you think the flight schedule is written?
Darts and which Apaches (STUDs peeking over/under/around the door jam) pissed SKEDs off the most for any given day.

Apaches always got the zero-dark-30 briefs for the next day if the darts didn't work.
