I hate to say it but some people do slip through the cracks and get into MECEP. Then the Marine Corps does need some sort of...I don't know...safety net (?) to hopefully catch them before they take their nasty ways into the officer corps.
I hear you, but that's true in any commissioning program. They'll weed a couple out in OCS and TBS, but still you'll see people slip through the cracks (some will kiss the a** of the TBS staff to do that and they're POS).

After TBS, whether you've observed these people or not, you can tell which ones kissed up to the TBS staff.

They need to have a class like bulldog (6 wk program), where ring-knockers, MECEP's, already devildogs can do their little FEX and get on thier merry way. Wasting money to carry out hazing is unecessary.
You will learn when you go to TBS that, "If it makes sense, IT'S WRONG!"

My question regarding "earning" the EGA: Why do Marine Option NROTC MIDN wear the EGA even before they've "earned" it?

Also, why do members of Marine Band (The President's Own) get to wear the EGA without any sort of boot camp?

We weren't allowed to wear the "US Marines" on our cammies or refer to ourselves as Marines until after OCS - and most people didn't want to.... because it is such an earned right. The gold EGAs were only to symbolize our Marine Option status -- it was never inferred that we ever owned/possessed/earned it. And since the ROTC rank and option designations are decided on high, you're asking the wrong person. Hell, I didn't even put a Marine sticker on my car till after OCS... bad juju.

And the band members go through boot camp....so yes, they're Marines like the rest of us.

Actually, members of the "Presidents Own" attend bootcamp at their own discretion. Other Marine Corps bands do go to boot camp, but the ones that play at 8th and I do not have to. I'm not sure why they are afforded this luxury, but I would guess that it has something to do with the fact that their skills are so refined that for them to spend 3 months playing f*ck f*ck games at Parris Island instead of the french horn would make them considerably less valuable as musicians.

Sad maybe, but true.

What exactly do you do in Leatherneck and who exactly is it for? My doctor was a Marine, back in the day... he said he just had to do a 6 week program (that wasnt too hard) and he became an officer/doctor of the Marines.

Squeeze - You think putting the sticker on your car is bad luck before graduating OCS? Hell, I was going to put it on if I got accepted, but I dont want to mess with superstition.

All doctors and medical personnel working with/for Marines are USN (medical corps, corpsmen, etc). Maybe he became a doctor later in life.

I don't consider myself 'superstitious' per se, but you'll see a lot of stuff like that if you stick with the aviation pipeline - pilots tend to be a superstitious group it seems. Lots of things that seem a little odd to outsiders are normal to the community. Personally, I don't like seeing "my" wings displayed in the O-club or on a patch board b/c I haven't earned them.... I know they're there, but I refuse to go see the case. Things like going through the same preflight ritual everytime you fly, putting on your gear the exact same way everytime, and whatnot. Stuff like that. It's hard to explain, but if you get in, you'll see. Bad juju abounds.... I just prefer to avoid it. I'm sure the others have similar traits...even if they won't admit it ;)
