I've heard some great stories about how incredible the hump and even the first class section is on BA 747s. I'd like to just see it one day.
Back in simpler times, when I was little, I got to go up to the cockpit of a 747 and look around while they flew for a little while. I was very young but I still remember it. Amazing experience. I don't remember really caring about how nice first class was, just that it was cool to be upstairs--but it was a long time ago.
It's got the best view in the house --- and it's one of the best views -- ever.
If you have the means ... I highly recommend it.

I just flew Bahrain to London on a BA 747. Because the Bahrain airport sucks, they had to board us through the front of the plane. The first class, and even business class sections were phenomenal. They were designed around a complete entertainment center/mobile office where you could lay down and sleep if you wanted to in almost complete privacy. They got complimentary noise canceling headsets, thick down quilts, and a basket full of goodies to snack on. I didn't get to see the hump, but I am guessing it was even more phenomenal.
I was, of course, sitting in steerage class with the peasants. We still had an on-demand entertainment thing with a bunch of new movies and TV shows and a gift pack with a toothbrush, a shaving set, blinders, and socks (socks? Must be a BA thing). All in all I enjoyed the experience, although the Haji food catering sucked.
A lot of airlines used to give out socks on their overseas flights and lengthy flights. I recall as a kid getting the packs when my parents would bring them home(they worked for the airlines.) It's a good idea though especially for someone wearing a suit and needing a change of socks before they get really nasty smelling.
The hump on some airlines, such as JAL is actually just more coach seating, but even then it's still better as it's 3 and 3, vice 3 4 3 down below. United and NW have biz class up there and it's pretty nice, though I tend to like Delta biz class better. I've never seen first class up there and I've never seen one configured with a lounge as had been done in the past.
I know we'll never again see the days of aviation luxury like existed in the past and that's too bad. I'd pay a bit more for a better experience but the choices are pay a shit ton more for biz or first class, or get jammed in with the drooling proletariat.
The 747 hearkens back to the age of elegance in aviation. Even though I don't like riding coach in one, there's still nothing as majestic as that plane when she's sitting at your gate, waiting to take you to you destination. The sexy lines almost make me forget how much travel has become such an unpleasant experience.
Now if we could just have some hot stews again...

Forget it then, I'll just stick to SWA.
My mom was a flight attendant back in the 70s. She flew on the DC-8, L1011, and the 747. She loved the 747. I remember her telling me about how they had a small bar and a piano. Awesome.
That's one airplane I loved to fly on as a kid.

1. It changes ... for most of my time on the WHALE ... it was First Class ... I never could figure out why, as the pax had to hump their carry-on up a narrow, winding staircase and they sometimes fell DOWN on the return trip backside ...
Anyhoo ... I've seen it 1st, Business ... and something in between. 2. That ALL depends upon the traveling public ... the airlines just try to provide what the pax want ... if they want Greyhound Bus -- that's what they get ... if they want the Matson LURLINE to HNL -- that's what they get.

I'm curious how, as a passenger, the L1011 was any different from the DC-10?
As a passenger -- nothing. As a pax .... you don't know shit.
As a Pilot -- the L-10 was a SIGNIFICANTLY mo' bettah' airplane than the Diesel-10 ... but both birds were technically more advanced in concept than in design ... so they BOTH puked a lot on the ramp or in the air ... the L-10t just didn't have the long term MX support from Lockheed that the -10 did from MD ...
The thinking was ... the 1st and BIZ pax like to take off their shoes on a long, 10+ hour flight (we don't care about steerage class) ... so let's give 'em somethin' more comfy to swath their stinky feet in ... thus was born: the airline 'cruise sox' ...
They were intended to be 'disposable' ... but the concept of standing in a 5-6+ hour old biffy (head) in my 'airline sox' on a urine streaked deck just didn't do it ... for me.
I've still got a few pair -- unused -- if you want them, PM me.
IF ONLY the Navy had come up w/ a similar concept for 'cruise' ... i.e., the 'disposable cruise sox' ... I'd still be in ...
