That's a pretty cool story - can he squeeze anything else onto his resume? SEAL, Astronaut, I don't know ... maybe Pope?
Hard to beat his resume, but he wasn't the first SEAL and hasn't been in space yet whereas the trailblazer, Bill Sheperd, was a SEAL when Cassidy was taking his first steps and flew three Shuttle missions before being selected to be first commander of the International Space Station. NASA ranks him up there with the hallowed pioneers and recommended him to receive the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, which was awarded in 2003 before Cassidy was selected by NASA to join the team.
Interestingly, after a brilliant NASA career, he rejoined his community and worked directly for then Rear Admiral Olsen who was SPECWARCOM at the time. The NSW Mission Support Center at Coronado owes its creation to him and the NASA espertise he brought to NSW.
Now that's a guy you don't want to play "Can you top this?" with at a bar.
