Thats weird... I guess it is nice if you have a decent job available, but would suck to be a 2Lt and working at Mickey D's to put food on the table.

I never worked with Mike company, not sure how that works.

Just to add as well, when I commissioned they had too many injured LTs in Mike company (not enough rooms, jobs) and they weren't allowing ANYONE else to come in before their report date...also my OSO tried to get PTAD up with him for those 60 days but it was turned down by district for financial reasons...

PTAD is not a sure thing, they don't have to give it to you and they certainly don't have to let you check into Mike Company early.

The reason PLCers arent paid prior to reporting is because they are listed (or at least were) as USMC Reserve and therefore not on active duty and since not qualified to do any drills don't rate pay or benefits, however once reporting to TBS they are reassigned as AD.

A few options:
Back in '90, friend of mine convinced NAS Pens. student control to send them to DLI. They had to "no cost TAD" it. But they got fluent in French. You could enroll in one of the online JPME courses (rec. the USAF version). You could knock that out prior to being forced to do it during one of your sea tours. You are junior and inexperienced, but it is a requirement to screen for O-5/Command. It may seem like a long time from now. Or you could chill out and flip burgers and surf (sounds good to me).

If I were you, and couldn't get to DLI (not a bad life out there and you get a language code and some $$$ for it each month), I'd enroll somehow in JPME Phase I online and knock out the airfarce version online in under six months and still flip burgers, drink beer and surf.

Must be an O-3 for JPME. I'd be surprised if anyone would be willing to fund an unnecessary trip to DLI, especially the Marines. Don't want to come off as a nay-sayer, just being realistic.

Oh yeah, my PEBD was two years ago; the day I checked in to OCS.
Ahhh, a PLC'r... All bets are off. Yup, you won't get paid. And, I generally hate you guys for one reason - your pay in the fleet will reflect the two years you spent getting drunk in college, I was under contract to the military the entire time in college (2 1/2 years enlisted before I went to the Academy, so if I quit or got kicked out I went right back to the enlisted side), and my time at USNA is not creditable for pay purposes... Explain that one.

Start calling USMC units. All you have to do is find one that would like to have you as a stash Lt, it might be no cost orders, but I think as long as you're showing up on an Alpha roster and working, you'll get paid. The reserves generally have more money floating around than the active duty (and would be more willing/able to put you to work), so I'd start with them.

But then you could probably get free food every day and have lots of money left over for hookers/blow. That is, until you turn into the guy from "Supersize Me" and fail your physical.

Hah, yeah it does suck that I'll have to get a job, but oh well. My OSO told me to get a job at a golf course, and then we'd be best friends.

The reason I got orders for October was that apparently they have a glut of LT's in flight training or waiting for flight training, so any air contracts have to wait longer until TBS. My OSO said if I were ground I would probably have gotten an early spring class date.

Anyways, I figure I'll get a job waiting tables during the winter, and that will give me lots of free time to take snowboarding trips. It'll be nice to be in college mode without the stress of classes. Although honestly I'd rather be at TBS or otherwise employed by the Marine Corps.

I'm a PLC NFO contract, commissioned Dec 17th. I'm PTAD at the OSO for the month of January, check in at Quantico 60 days prior to TBS for IFS, and then start TBS in April. How long did you wait to send in your commissioning docs? I did mine the first business day after getting back from OCS, and I had started my background check before the summmer. I don't understand the wait until October. I was told that I was very lucky for getting April, but all of my other friends who wanted April got Delta not October...

You can PTAD for 60 days and then check in for IFS 60 days before TBS. That would get you 4 months of a paycheck.

I can't remember exactly when I turned in my commissioning paperwork, but it was sometime at the end of the summer. There's no IFS for me since I have a load of civi ratings and ~250 hours of flight time already.

All I know about the wait is what my OSO told me: that there's a shit ton of air contracts in the system and so they are sending the ground guys through TBS first.

My OSO did mention that they may be changing PTAD to 90 days before TBS report date. Anyone know anything about that?

I found that if you don't have some history with the unit (prior/reserve) they aren't too receptive to offering you a PTAD position. I was told "there's really nothing for a 2ndLt who hasn't been to TBS to do around here".

Where do I staryt - You hat PLCers because we got to get drunk and have an earlier PEBD than you, however had to wait months to get on the dole.

-- yet you got a FREE education and got paid the day you got commissioned. Id have to do the mathe, but I believe you won on that one.

Lemme - guess--Are you one of those guys that leaves everyday at 1500, never misses an opportunity to come in as late as possible when flying nights --- yet bitches because he has to use or loses 24 days of leave every September?

since you’re a boot to posting on these forums, here's some advice - there’s stuff that’s sometimes said on these forums that shouldn’t be taken literally or personally ... and i wouldn't insinuate anything about somebody you probably know nothing about, there's some pretty salty pilots that hang around these forums.

Carno,

Congrats. I just went to a commissioning ceremony for one of my former platoon-mates yesterday. From LCpl to 2nd Lt. ;) I got my silver dollar. Good work and welcome.
