Sort of a historical question here on the names of the operating areas out there in the Deep Blue, some of which display a nice sense of humour. The famous first ones are of course:

Yankee Station (off North Vietnam)
Dixie Station (South Vietnam) - which of these was named first, by the way?

others I've heard of are:

Gonzo Station (Persian Gulf) Why so named?
Bagel Station (off Israel/Lebanon 1980s)
Voodoo Station (off Haiti)

Are there more? Are these names still used? Are they somewhat unofficial?

Cheers
JT

Yankee and Dixie were both established in April, 1964. The USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 and her escort group (YES!! Still pulling her weight !!!) was the first US carrier assigned to the point.

... the HAWK with what looks like a deckload of A-4s, A-3s, F-8's, F-4's ... and what ??

The name, of course, derived from it being the geographic reference point "Y" (for the northern point) , phonetically pronounced "Yankee". Originally, Yankee was located 160 km (about 100 mi) from the coast, at 16° N latitude and 110° E longitude. Dixie was 11° N latitude and 110° E longitude. These two operating areas were later expanded to include all of the water areas north of the DMZ - Yankee - and all of the territorial waters of South Vietnam - Dixie. The rest are attempts to re-capture the "dash" and "verve" -- panache -- of the earlier names "Yankee" and "Dixie" for current generations of Naval Aviators.

This was just a few months prior to the Gulf of Tonkin "incident" .... strange, huh?? Almost like someone knew something was coming ... ?? And when something doesn't make sense --- there's always a "good reason" .... :)

Hmm. You sure about the date; sir? I see no SPADS on deck??

Teacher! Teacher! i know i know. The reason!

Pres Johnson prior to election: "Ahh will not send our boys over there to Asia to fight and die on the Asian mainland!!"

(But just in case, let us prepare)

Right after the election (we won) Turner Joy and Kearsarge (CVA 33 as i remember) happend to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, had a radar malfunction (double sweep, targets appear half the distance they really are as return is picked up on second sweep). STIX STIX was the cry.

About a month before the GTI, 25ID soldiers at Schofield Bks, Hawaii were told to prepare for movement, probably based on some really good intelligence.

And we have a reason. Port Walnut here we come! The rest is surrender. :D :D :D :D

CVN-71 was off the coast of Pakistan during OEF. It was called Be-No Station.

Be no liberty
Be no booze
Be no sex

It was there when we broke the record for most days at sea without port (159)

Ahh, good times. Read the book before either movie came out. :D

Not on my jet, good buddy. Remember, I used to be one of you. I'm like the one guy that makes it out of the ghetto to be a pro ball player. I'm like their hero (no pun intended) ;)

Since I managed to be the FNG on duty when the air wing did a sink ex and the squadron got to fire 4 live ones, and since I managed to be long-term med down the last time the squadron had a bunch of HARMEXes, I think the ordies are going to have to wait a while to be jinxing me - I seem to be doing a nice job of it myself! :indiffere
