The Chinese actually bought 3 former Soviet/Russian 'aircraft carriers'. Two were of the former Kiev class, which carried S/VTOL aircraft only. The third was the ex-Varyag, which did not have engines or electronics when she was sold (basically without the guts).

The two Kiev types are amusement parks but the ex-Varyag is still hanging out in the shipyard. The only former Soviet aircraft carrier that is certain to be used for its originally intended function right now is the ex-Admiral Gorshkov which is being converted to a conventional carrier for the Indians, the INS Vikramaditya.

Navy War College paper on Chinese carrier ambitions:
http://www.nwc.navy.mil/press/Review/2004/Winter/art6-w04.htm

It also points out the first carrier purchase the Chinese made over 20 years ago, the former HMAS Melbourne, Australia's last carrier.

Details on the INS Vikramaditya:

You need to learn how to convert meters to feet, she is a lot more like 70-90% of the size of the Nimitz (displacement and length):

ex-Varyag

Length: 300 metres overall
270 metres at waterline
Beam: 73 metres overall
38 metres at waterline
66,600-67,500 tonnes full load

Nimitz class

Overall length: 1,092 feet (333 meters)
Overall width: 252 feet (
Beam at waterline: 134 feet (40.8 meters)
Full load displacement: About 95,000 tons

Rumors have been abound for years since the Chinese have acquired former Russian Navy aviation related ships and aircraft, but now they have purchased 4 arresting gear systems indicating possibly that they intend to build two new carriers and finish outfitting the Varyag (bought incomplete from Ukraine for $20M supposedly to turn it into a floating casino). See Varyag link for lots of images.
