Even with a draft we were able to fight a 10+year war in Vietnam so I don't think it'll solve that problem. It would certainly split the difference between what the Founding Fathers wanted (no standing army at all - just militia) and our professional military of Hessian soldiers of fortune.
Except for the Navy, they understood we need a Navy.
We were able to run a 20 year war because our country really didn't have skin in the game.
I wonder what they would think of our monstrous military now.
Also the corollary to that argument is that out professional military allowed us to try and do the right thing in AFG/IRQ without overwhelming public pressure due to the skin involved.
Calling our military a bunch of Hessian mercanies is also a bit heavy handed. There's a difference between serving your country and being a soldier of fortune.
I'm sure if the Founding Fathers saw the 21st century they'd admit there's a lot of things going on they couldn't have foreseen. Like the fact that being an infantryman these days is a lot harder than just having everyone grab their musket off the mantel and line up and shoot in the direction the guy with the fancy hat and sword points until night time or when it's harvest season.
