It would certainly split the difference between what the Founding Fathers wanted (no standing army at all - just militia) and our professional military of Hessian soldiers of fortune.

Except for the Navy, they understood we need a Navy.

We were able to run a 20 year war because our country really didn't have skin in the game.

I wonder what they would think of our monstrous military now.
Even with a draft we were able to fight a 10+year war in Vietnam so I don't think it'll solve that problem.

Also the corollary to that argument is that out professional military allowed us to try and do the right thing in AFG/IRQ without overwhelming public pressure due to the skin involved.

Calling our military a bunch of Hessian mercanies is also a bit heavy handed. There's a difference between serving your country and being a soldier of fortune.

I'm sure if the Founding Fathers saw the 21st century they'd admit there's a lot of things going on they couldn't have foreseen. Like the fact that being an infantryman these days is a lot harder than just having everyone grab their musket off the mantel and line up and shoot in the direction the guy with the fancy hat and sword points until night time or when it's harvest season.

Say it again so the people in the back can hear.

Love the draft or hate it, the forever war wouldn't have been possible without the all-volunteer military (among other things).

They'll fuck it up. Most of my family lives in Colorado and it is a mess. The "founding farmers" of pot growing were rapidly pushed out my major corporations that are now, quite ironically, pushing for ever more enforcement against "illegal" pot (and winning the push). Taxes didn't work out so well so the state raised them. The state is about to pass (as they should) DUI rules for pot users that match those of heavy duty drunks.

Once it becomes a business, it becomes a business. Business will not tolerate competition so they unicorn of cheap, legal, pot will simply go up in smoke as you read the newest federal warning label on your Phillip Morris produced pack of pre-rolled weed.
I mean, it's pretty easy to grow weed from what I read ?‍♂️

One of the biggest opponents of legalizing it in California before it passed was the farms growing medical in Modesto area for fear they’d get pushed out.

We might still be there without the anti-war protests.

Well, I can say it cause I are one of the Hessian mercs. ;)

That "overwhelming public pressure" is the sound of democracy at work, too.

All the more reason for a draft at least into a reserve capacity.

Talking with my FIL retired infantry COL (RIP) he said there was a conscious decision to move critical capabilities into the reserves and guard in order to ensure we'd be pulling from across America if we got into a another long war. Didn't seem to slow us down, though.

Every American Citizen should be compelled to complete at least two years of public service to our nation. Military, First Responder, In-Demand Volunteer. Every citizen . . . .
That sounds terrible.

Working with dirt bags was hard enough. Imagine one that was forced to be there. No thanks.

,
It worked out great for me, and was the absolute right decision. I think Mike Rowe has it right, not everyone wants, or is ready for what you think is the right path.
That’s great it worked out for you.

But I don’t think I’d recommend anyone who asked me if they should enlist to do so if they had the means to go to college first.
