Hey guys, I did not get selected for Intel and now I am up for SWO this month. How competitive am I for SWO? Thanks for feedback.

Age 24

OAR 44 ( I know this is crappy, should I taker it again after 90 days for the 3rd time?)

I am about to graduate with a degree in International Studies from the University of North Texas.

My GPA for my package was 3.1 (I destroyed it this summer working 60hrs a week)

I have good references from past employers

Intel or SWO? What do you think?

Hey guys,

Here is my situation: I am about to Graduate in May and I just got rejected for Intel. Now I am up for board in SWO. My question is should I be excited about SWO or should I try to put together a better package this Summer and reapply for Intel (By retaking ASTB and getting a better score by actually studying) I am a huge International Affairs guy, love traveling, cultures, languages, geopolitics and I am just wondering if should hold out and reaplly for Intel or is SWO pretty awesome? My recrutier says I am a sho-in for SWO (I am not so sure about that)

Any advice would be awesome!

My info

OAR: 44

GPA: 3.2

Language: Russian

Degree: International Studies from the University of North Texas

Dude,

I don't know what a competitive score on the OAR is; I don't even know my ASTB score (which doesn't even matter now that I'm swearing in tomorrow).

What I do know is that with my GPA of 2.6 in Health Care Administration, speaking Russian, and playing D-I rugby, I was able to be pro-rec'd for SNA/SNFO/SWO (I selected SNA).

No stress dude.

Pro-rec'd INTEL!!!!!
I am just wondering if should hold out and reaplly for Intel or is SWO pretty awesome?

I can't be 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain based on a few weeks worth of quiet observation that this is the wrong place to find people who will tell you that SWO is awesome. I'm not saying it isn't, one of my best friends is a SWO and loves it (and it's my 2nd choice too), but there is a TON of SWO bashing here haha. Just sayin...

From what I've gathered, there is good and bad in every community, and no one can tell you what you will think is awesome. It'll be a tough decision that only you can make. Get as much information as you can about all your options before you make a decision. I hope everything works out for you!

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but like everybody says, nobody knows what the board looks for in a person.

I am 23, MIS undergrad with 3.73 gpa, working currently on my MBA and had a 3.4 and I had a OAR of 56 and I was not-select for SWO on Feb board. I had placed SWO below Supply so I may have been passed over by SWO but who knows. Thank god for my choice of Supply over SWO. Chop is what I want to be, if you read the posts on here, SWO life sucks hard.

I think there are a lot of outside factors and nobody can tell you if you will be selected or not.

Just because someone got selected with a 34 or a 60 OAR, doesn't mean anything really. That being said however, you have as good a shot as anyone else that has been selected. Don't put in for SWO if you don't want it, however, if you want to be Navy Officer first and an Intel officer second then you should be fine with SWO.

Don't say things like this unless you've been there and done that. Do not give people misleading impressions of a Naval community with which you've never had any personal involvement solely based on your opinion because you heard from some guy on the Internets that it was good/bad/sucked. Your opinion is your opinion and yours alone and you should preface it as such so as to not discourage others.

^^^Agreed. Atriste's only experience with the SWO community is being rejected by them. Consider that when reading his expert opinions on how the Navy works.

II was not-select for SWO on Feb board...lots of words...if you read the posts on here, SWO life sucks hard.

GASP!!!! A non select talking shit about SWOs.

Seriously, I know a lot of aviation people talk bad about SWO, and sometimes it's all in fun, but people that have never seen/done/been around it start talking shit...

If your whole opinion of SWOs comes from AW, you need to STFU.

Sorry, I'm off my soapbox now.

Since everyone seems to be attacking me I suppose I'll defend myself.

I was merely stating that if you read most posts on here, you get the idea that SWO life isn't exactly awesome. I never said anywhere in my post that I had first hand knowledge of SWO life, just merely what I have read on here. All of you with SWO hard-ons should probably take a chill pill. You are all acting as though I have an axe to grind with the SWO community, I don't, get over it. Other than "SWO life sucks hard" which is an inference from the posts on AW, my posting was relavent to the question he asked based on my first hand knowledge of the application process.

I didn't know that he was a non-select, and I'm not gonna bash the guy regardless, and I do understand that since this is "AIR_WARRIORS" there is going to be some Brown Shoe vs. Black Shoe commentary and that's to be expected somewhat. However, the straight up bashing of the SWO community is uncalled for since there are still prospective folks from ALL communities that are active on or lurk these boards and it's incredibly unprofessional to give folks a negative impression of any community, especially when they might make *excellent* SWOs and be great leaders who do great things.

It's one thing for those of us with military ties who are used to this kind of "culture" but people who are wholly unfamiliar with it might take what is said on these boards as gospel because they have no other frame of reference (i.e. family, friends) who can help them sift out the bullshit.
