Corpus or Vance?

Come to Corpus Christi.

I, too, was offered a place at Vance by Student Control in Pensacola. Flying ejection-seat aircraft from the start sounded good. Being the black sheep in the flock also sounded good. And moving more quickly through training sounded good.

But I chose Navy training at Corpus, and never had a second thought about it. On those days when I wasn't scheduled in Primary and was "forced" to take the day off, I thought of my API classmate up at Vance and even gave him a call from the beach to see how he was doing. He didn't answer his phone because he was busy sitting in a classroom in Oklahoma. Go figure.

By the way, I dare say that the days that I had off from being "not scheduled" in VT-27 contributed greatly to my being able to focus more keenly on the days that I did have flights or sims. And the resulting 72 NSS from Primary, I'm pretty sure, helped me get the pipeline I wanted.

While I'm sure there are factors that mitigate the downside of AF UPT for Naval Aviators, I'll challenge any one who tries to make the claim that AF UPT is actually an advantage.

Bottom line is this.... if they tell you to go to Vance, then just go. Get Primary over with. After all, the Primary phase gets old no matter if you are at CC, Whiting, Vance or Moody and you will want to be done to go on to the next phase of training. Before you know it, it will be selection day and then you will be off to where ever for that phase of training. Good luck with everything, I hope you do well!

Professional Mentoring

...Another good reason to train with your own.

My onwing was one of the squadron Department Heads who knew how to fly Navy, knew how to teach Navy, and perhaps most importantly, knew what things to emphasize to get me ready for follow-on training -- in the Navy.

And having someone in your own service calling you every once in a while to check up on your progress ain't all bad either.

The 12 hour day thing, was possibly a "short period of time" at moody, but at Vance, its seems to last several months in the least. Ive seen classes be on and off 12 hour days until a few weeks before finishing (06-07 for instance).

As to getting a jet slot, after that class which gave three jet slots and one E2/C2 (I'm assuming you are talking about 06/02), we've had... two Navy get jet slots that I can think of (that is in a 12 week period).. so, the "its easier to get jets there" gouge is bunk.. which.. should be obvious anyways. We send alot of guys helo, but, alot of guys have Helo as choice two or one, so, that doesnt really mean much.

As to what you are going to fly, the 8th is half tweets/half Texans, and the 33rd is all Tweets, so, 75% chance of getting the tweet.

So.. here is my "no kidding" two cents:

Vance Pros:
1. The tweet, is a ****ing blast. It can pull 6.67 G's compared to the 34's 4.5, and the formation flying is /awsome/...16 form rides, and we get very close. Being three feet from a dude in fingertip while doing wingovers is a good time.

2. The class bond is a cool thing, alot of mutual help, and alot of class activities.

3. The instructors are good guys, and the timeline is awsome. You will never go more then a few days without flying, and you will always know whats coming next.

4. Their is something to be said for joint training, we are gonna fight with these dudes some day.

5. 33'rd's CO is Navy, and he is an awsome guy. 33rd also has a Navy Lt. Commander that is a great guy.

6. You /ARE NOT/ going to wash out if you go to Vance. It seriously.. just doesnt happen. You can unsat a dozen rides, and you are still gonna make it.

Cons:

1. The twelve hour day /sucks/.

2. Its sometimes more about "the timeline" then about "the training".

3. Enid Oklahoma........

4. maybe 3 or 4 in air EP's total.

5. Different insturment rules, little insturment time.

6. Enid Oklahoma.........

Seriously though, dont hate on it just because its Air Force training, they will make you a good pilot here.

If you want to do nothing but eat sleep study and fly, come to Vance, if you want to party and have a blast.. my buds in Corpus love it.

thats all i got.

The tweet was awsome, and its probably the most violent plane in the inventory from what i've been told. But then again it seems like some people aren't as interested in the planes they fly as they are in their quality of life and family life, and I understand why the navy primary squadrons would be more apealing to them

Do you mean different instrument rules or different instrument techniques and procedures?

Not sure how you are differing.

Different Rules Techniques and Procedures I would think.

E.G. Weather requierments for VFR, to file an alternate, etc.

You shouldn't have any problem finding a place. I'm leaving this weekend, so my place will be open. Just drive around on the island looking for "For Rent" signs or go to one of the many realtors out here.
