Welp, finished my Hike, Bike, and Beer Tour 2021. Spent the last couple of days in the UP and the upper thumb of Michigan. Some notes:
She'd been fully vaxxed, her 13 year old grand-daughter had been severely sick, her son was refusing to get the vax due to being young and healthy.
There was a weird covid vibe in that part of the country, having come off of the big surge. The Hampton Inn is right next to the local hospital, and the breakfast lady told me that for a while they had been closed to all but covid patients and were sending them all over the country as they'd hit their limit. The bars and restaurants were just reopening. I drank at the Mitchell Street Pub. Good beer, OK food.
I can see why they had a surge. One quick mart in the UP had a full page describing how masks were mandated, but if you had a medical problem you didn't have to wear one, and if you didn't wear one they assumed you had a medical problem. So of course 75% of the people had a 'medical problem' in the store. But in all the places, mask wearing and sans masks just did their thing.
Everyone I talked to where it came up, had either been vaxxed or weren't planning to. No one was waiting for it, but they might have been laying low rather than out and about.
But once everyone who wants a shot has received a shot, we should just fully open up and let the virus rage through the free riders so we get to herd immunity.
The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was awesome. Highly recommend it.
I spent the night at the Petosky Hampton Inn, and the lady working the breakfast line told me the local Odawa Tribe had opened up their allotment to the locals to help get to herd immunity, having hit the mark with their own people, so yup. At least in Michigan they're on the mark.

Disappointing that a supposedly educated person is still clinging to nonsense instead of facts. The most recent surge in Michigan had dick to do with masks just like Pennsylvania. Just like the lack of surges in Texas, Florida, Iowa, and other states that stopped the theater.
I’m glad to see you venturing out and realizing that it’s over. When everyone has had the opportunity to get vaccinated, which is now, it’s over. There will be no “rage” through the unvaccinated community. It will be fine. Welcome back to the real world. Some of us never left.

What's wrong with the science changing? Would you prefer to live in a world where doctors still practiced lobotomies and phrenology?
But wait.. Our resident elite Professor at an over priced University told us that this isn’t the science? How dare they change their position? Any bets on the President still wearing a mask?
Because nothing changed. It’s not some new revelation just uncovered today that the vaccines work just like it wasn’t new knowledge that respiratory viruses don’t spread outdoors a couple weeks ago. Instead they led a campaign meant to deceive people into thinking vaccinated people are a threat to get and spread the virus. Now that vaccination rates are plummeting they can be a little more truthful.
Expect the military to keep the same idiotic policy for a while because bureaucracy.
