I'm not agreeing with you or disagreeing with you, but I've met some pretty serious bad asses that couldn't very accurately relate what it was they just did just 5 minutes ago. They may be great at what they do, but they can't quite accurately put it into words. Maybe this guy isn't what he says he is, but regardless his writings will be an inspiration to young boots that will join the Army/Marines. It would really be a shame if he isn't what he says he is, but then again "Gysgt" R. Lee Ermy wasn't a Gysgt for several years while he was going by the title...

We have plenty of legitimate servicemen and women whose actions and deeds can inspire young men and women to join the service, we don't need some poser's doing it........:(

As for R Lee Ermey, I have never seen him claim himself to be something that he was not, unless you include ficitional movies........ He was given an honarary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant in 2002 by the then Commandant, so he can call himself Gunny all he wants........

I go see the Naval recruiter the next day. The differences in the branches are evident just from the differences in the recruiting offices.

The Army office was Spartan and utilitarian. There was nothing there that wasn't essential to the job of recruiting people into the Army. The few posters and brochures that were there were subtle and understated. The pictures on the wall are combat pictures. The desks had nothing on them but pens, paper and phones.

In comparison to this, the Naval recruiting office was like the Playboy Mansion.

I'd raise the flag just based off this.

Is this the same Army who has, on the UT-Austin campus over the past 3 weeks; had semi-trailers filled with video games, one of their NASCAR vehicles parked in front of the ROTC building, set up rock-climbing walls, put a Hummer on display, given out "What Would Chuck Norris Do? Join Army ROTC" T-shirts, and plastered their gov sedan with huge Army stickers that cover the doors and hood?

Only the essentials, I guess.

I don't even want to get into the monstrosity of a recruiting campaign they put on at Panama City Beach and South Padre Island during spring break every year:

But the beach chairs they gave out for running their obstacle course were clutch.

I don't think it's real.......

The more I read this web diary the more I don't buy that it is real. It sounds more like something some bored Army recruiter would write. Everyone in it is a stereotype, from the grizzled Army Sergeant to the Navy recruiters to the stockbroker who has more money that he knows what to do with it and brags about it (how many times does he bring up the fact that he is rich?). It is a sales pitch for the Army's program to get guys straight into the Green Beret's.

Finally, there is stuff like this:

"What I'm about to tell you is against Army and recruiter rules, and I could get court marshaled if you tell anyone about what I'm about to say."

"He was a WWII vet who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross as a Marine Captain fighting the Japanese in the Pacific."

I don't think it's real - here's what glaringly screamed out at me:

Now, I've never been in the SF, and I've never FLOWN CAS. But I've controlled a number of sorties. I can honestly say that this dialogue screams that he made it up.

No "10 Seconds", No "Laser On", No "Spot", No "In from the North", No "Off, 1 Away."

While I don't expect that a grunt would know these nuances, no self respecting TACAIR guy would ever not use them, as they are doctrinal. If he's recalling from memory, you'd think he would recall what the pilots said not what "sounds cool". Finally - I have NEVER heard a pilot say over.

I with you on this one. There wasn't a single part in there that would have been said in that scenario, whether it was CAS or TGO. Either way, that conversation is pure hollywood.

I just don't see it........Now there are some who claim that people join up because the military offers them money they would not see on the outside but I haven't heard the criminal one lately.........

The fact that he misspelled court martial ought to be a dead give-away. I thought this dude had Ivy League credentials?

Edit: Upon further review, this guy is associated with Tucker Max - king of hyperbole (albeit hilarious hyperbole). As far as credibility/legitimacy, I would lump it in with all the other internet humor sites.

Concur...this is so bogus starting with use of "Bravo Two Zero" callsign. It's dated 2004 so he's apparently moved on.

The editor, "Tucker Max", takes feedback on the blog. It's my understanding that he's known almost universally as a douchebag.

What are you talking about? That linked thread is full of nothing but sycophants. At any rate, they are/were clearly working this as an angle for media production, not a realistic portrayal of anything military.
