I have Ulcerative Colitis (very, very similar to Crohns), and have been turned away many times. From the research I've done, its possible to get a waiver if you're already in the military when diagnosed, but us civilians wanting to join are pretty much SOL. :(

It doesnt help matters that recruiters feel like they're wasting their time once they find out about it... I've received the run-around from every recruiter I've spoken with.

is it in your medical record?

don't be the one to bring it up, unless it's already documented. If it's documented, downplay it.

Unlikely. I've been totally healthy for quite a while, and it doesnt seem to matter to them, unfortunately. But whatever you do, dont give up. Keep pushing, and hopefully something will work out. If anything does, let me know, I'll be very interested.

Every recruiter I've ever been to has asked at some point of the conversation if I have any past or present medical conditions and reads off a list of "including but not limited to" stuff, and basically tells me to spill the beans.

A good answer is "not that I recall"

But once you sign, wouldnt that be considered "perjury", since its a legally binding document?

I am not trying to be a smartass, I'm just curious, cause it would really suck to get slapped with fraudulent enlistment or something like that.

yeah, i want to do rotc.. but i dunno if the AF or Navy would be more leinient in this situation

They went over it in the checksix forum...one of the nastiest sounding things i've ever heard of. Apparently, there's at least one person flying with it.

From what I gathered, it has to do with your bowels.

hey what is Crohn's disease anyway?

Crohns is the inflammation of the of the small intestines. Ulcerative Colitis is the inflammation of the large intestines aka colon/bowel. Symptoms and treatment for these 2 conditions are nearly identical, and takes examination by a Gastroenterologist to make an accurate diagnosis.

*Edit* Just in case anyone is interested, here is a link concerning Naval Aviation and Gastroenterology. http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/Text/NAMI/WaiverGuideTopics/gastroenterology.htm
