CVN coming to a neighborhood near you

Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
With a move to Jacksonville, do you think there will be more aircraft stationed at NAS Jax or will the CAW/CAG stay stationed at Oceana? Just curious, and forgive my ignorance for not really knowing the difference between an Air Wing and Air Group.

OK to be ignorant, we have just the place for these type questions.

Any opposition isn't coming from Jax, it's the people here in Virginia who are vowing not to lose one of their carriers. It really kills me too, because every time I turn the radio or TV on these state officials are complaining about how the Navy is deserting them by taking an aircraft carrier from the area and how much it will hurt the local economy. I think they're already counting the money from the Reagan before it's even commissioned.

???????????????

I think you mean the USS George H.W. Bush.

Reagan just got back from a six-month deployment...seems like it's already in commission.

Indeed:

I haven't spent much time in the Norfolk area but I got the impression that the locals wanted the Navy gone.

A small but very vocal group , CCAJN (led by a retired Navy CAPT I believe) would like Oceana in Virginia Beach to close due to jet noise. I’ve never heard anyone in the local area who wants to loose ships out of Norfolk.

Bring it, and while they're at it they need to kick the commercial entities out of Cecil and make it a Master Jet Base again. 103rd St. area has totally gone to shit in the last few years. Not like when Cecil was open. People in Oakleaf need to get over themselves as far as jet noise is concerned.

Not likely, after the last great push from some very well connected folks failed. The planned community of Oakleigh is just part of the obstacle. Better to look at expansion elsewhere.
If it were '98, I'd say give it a go, but Firestone, Mitsui, and Hanjiin are now developing major distribution centers on and around the Cecil Commerce Center in connection with their prospective port facilities at the Jaxport terminals. Way too much inertia and frankly a lot more bucks to the Jacksonville area than a few squadrons would bring.
I'd say, hit Mayport up first for expansion. Put an OLF or two in lower GA and viola!

Yea, I was just rambling........There was talk/rumors of us moving out there for awhile (125th FW, FL ANG) but that got nixed as well. Now, they're spending big bucks on our base, so we'll be staying at JIA for sure.

:woot: :woot: Wonder when they'll actually move one down here, so my house value might actually return to where I can break even in 2.5 years.

Don't they have to put all the infrastructure in to support a CVN before they even move one down to NS Mayport? Could be waiting on that real estate a while...

Which brings me to another point...The article mentioned the CVNs being too big to transit the panama canal. Aren't the panamaniacs planning on an expansion of the locks in the canal? Are they going to be big enough to get a CVN thru?

He doesn't want it to close and cause home values to drop, he wants jets gone and base realigned for something else with a military purpose. CCAJN (pronounced "Cajun") was created by a retired Navy EOD type (CAPT John Shick) who became an activist. They claim thousands of supporters, but have only produced a small band of zealots with their bumperstickers while creating a mass gaggle of counterstickers.

Infinitely more of these in Tidewater than the CCAJN ones whose website is currently inop.

I've always loved that line from CCAJN...don't close the base, because the economy of VB depends on it, just make it something not noisy. Riiiiight. Shit, how about we just move the Navy out altogether (being as we're all noisy, and ill-mannered to boot) and just have a cash-dispensing stand for the Citizenry at the front gate? You know, cut out the middlemen?

They'll take the Navy money, as long as they don't have to see or hear or otherwise be inconveninced by their cash cow. Talk about wanting to have your goddamned cake and eat it too.

I don't know much about the citizenry of Jax...I'm sure some flake-and-nut types will make some noise, but is there a critical mass of Earth First types around there who will protest the CVN move? Usually it seems like it's a coalition of tree-huggers and NIMBY "but my property values!" people who try and litigate these things to death.

See... what I wonder... is how much power does the Navy have to just say "Screw you, it's our base, we'll do what we want." You know, even if Jax didn't want the carrier etc, could they still do it?

None. The Navy works for the President and he works for voters and voters complain to representatives and senators who complain to the President and say "you won't get X" and in the end the Navy gets screwed.

Zero sympathy for the noise crowd, you bought around a known airfield (civilian, military, model I don't care) suck it up or move.
