Designation Question....Confused?

Alright, so I applied only for SNA, got pro rec'd and have been waiting for my final select. My recruiter called this morning and told me I got it. SWEET! A small concern arose however. As I'm talking to the recruiter he's reading me the congratulation letter he has. In the letter it said something to the effect of "Congratualtions to being selected as a Naval Flight Officer, designation 1390...blahblahblah" or something like that. At this point I said whoooaaa there. I didn't apply Naval Flight Officer, or NFO, I only applied for pilot, SNA. He said that the names on paper is the same, but the designation number I got...139X whatever is for pilot. Now I'm pretty sure 139X is the pilot designation, I just want to make sure this is normal and the Naval Flight Officer thing is just wording....Basically does this sound correct??? Thanks for whatever info guys.

Is your recruiter an aviator? They know these designators cold. If not, keep asking questions. At any rate, get your hands on the piece of paper and see for yourself. The number is likely what counts and Schnugg's designator matrix lays it all out.

Oh yeah, congrats!

well... heres the break down... 1390 is CANDIDATE aviation, 1310 is Pilot, and 1320 is NFO. You get these designators AFTER completing flight school.

Did you even click on the link Schnugg posted before spouting off this diarrhea? It is clearly wrong. Sometimes I don't see why any of us spend any effort to help you guys.

139X - SNA
137X - SNFO
131X - NA
132X - NFO

There is no such thing as Candidate aviation.

Don't know about the Navy side, but I kind of disregarded it when I realized that it was wrong on the USMC side. I'm guessing it was outdated at best. Here's the correct info:

7509 - Pilot, AV-8B
7523 - Pilot, F/A-18 A/C/D (Primary MOS for F/A-18D)
7525 - WSO, F/A-18D
7527 - Pilot, F/A-18D (Skill set after completing TAC(A), FAC(A), RECCE)
7532 - Pilot, MV-22
7543 - Pilot, EA-6B
7555 - Pilot, C-12
7556 - Pilot, KC-130 2P/3P
7557 - Pilot, KC-130 AC
7562 - Pilot, CH-46E (simply the best MOS)
7563 - Pilot, UH-1N
7564 - Pilot, CH-46 A/D
7565 - Pilot, AH-1W
7566 - Pilot, CH-53E
7578 - SNFO (TBS)
7588 - ECMO, EA-6B
7599 - SNA (TBS)

AE2,
Where's the confusion? In your post you explicitly stated Candidate Aviation, and you implied that there is one "undergrad" aviation designator (1390), both of which are incorrect.

This is where I got my info,

Form:
NAVCRUIT1131/105(10-06)
(Aviation Officer Candidate (1390) Program Service Agreement)

Sorry for the confusion.

Damn you! You didn't take my bait. Yes, I know you are an AT2. Here is what was supposed to happen:

You said:
Oh btw, you d!ck, I am an AT2

Me said:
Aviation Electronics Technician
Aviation Electricians Mate

Yup. Totally wrong....:irked_125

Anyways, my point is that using specific terms can be very important. Even though to the unwashed an AE and an AT might look and sound like the same thing, you and I know they are not. Using the appropriate term is very important to distinguish between the two. The same goes with talking about designators, the specific terms can be important depending on the context.
I know you knew what you were talking about, but I just wanted to make sure people less familiar with Naval Aviation did not come away with bad gouge.

So Bear, did you talk to your recruiter again yet? What exactly did it say?

Alright, here we go....I got my letter in the mail today so I'll copy it word for word so there is no confusion

"Upon completion of training you will be commissioned as an Ensign, United States Navy, in the Naval Flight Officer program, designator 13900. Based on your initials physical examination, blah blah blah....."

So that's my confusion. It says Naval Flight Officer, but the 13900 designator is for pilot. Just a little weird to me. I mean I only applied SNA. Seem correct to you guys??
