Do I have a shot at becoming a pilot???

FL does. If the cops come to a DV call, someone is leaving in cuffs.

Not ALWAYS the man. But usually.

For the record, I was arrested at work, and charges were dropped due to Manatee's timeline not jiving with the MO's timeline, who happened to be flying and FCF A with me when the alleged incident happened. Probably the only thing that saved my ass.

Virginia does have the law as well that is for sure why I got arrested. I had to submit my court paper work to DONCAF or whatever that acronym is to prove the the case was dropped in order to keep my security clearance and that all went through ok so I am not to worried about that incident compared to my ASTB score.

Unless it changed, doesn't the application ask for convictions, not arrests?

It specifically states arrests or convictions. I don't necessarily agree with this at all considering an arrest does not necessarily mean guilt, but it seems like you will get judged regardless.

It's the gift that keeps on giving. I have to jump through additional hoops when I buy guns.

I've applied to a couple flying jobs where I was told in the interview I was a shoo in, but then HR finds something in my record and kills it. And then I get a nasty form letter about where I can get a copy of the background check, do so and the only thing it shows was my arrest, no conviction.

I was an AT2 before I left the Navy to pursue higher education. My record wasn't quite as yours, but I was picked up to be an NFO. I suppose the only thing holding you back are your ASTB scores. I wanted to apply for SNA, but my eyes weren't up to par. Are your eyes within regs, or are you planning on getting corrective surgery? Finally, I think for SNA you need to be commissioned by your 29th birthday (with the age waver). If you enlisted at 18, you're still well within that. LFCFan posted a list of the scores of people that went up for this last board, here are the results: http://www.airwarriors.com/communit...g-to-jan-board-2013.39817/page-40#post-726916. It would seem as though having a 7+ on your PFAR would be the best for SNA.
Anyway, Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! I appreciate your feedback and congrats on getting picked up! I already got another ASTB test date scheduled for March 6th and I just bought my third study guide (Peterson's). I hope with a solid three months of studying I can up my scores to what is required.

I did join the Navy when I was 18. I am currently 25, but I turn 26 in two weeks so this June board is my only board I have a shot at without the waiver request, which is of course if I can up my ASTB score. My eyes are perfect. I have 20/15 from what I was told when I received my last night vision goggle physical. So physically, I am good to go I just need to get their mentally apparently.

Oh, maybe you are able to answer this. I have 5 tattoos with one of which is visible, but I had waivers for all, but one (which isn't visible) when I joined the Navy enlisted. Due I need to apply for all new waivers and do you know if these waivers get approved for officers often? In my seven years in the Navy I haven't seen to many officers with visible tattoos so it worries me a bit.

Thanks.

Nice to know I have a whole life of bullshit ahead of me caused by this dumb shit. You ever try to get the arrest record expunged? I plan on paying a lawyer to do this for me in the near future. I hear that can help in most circumstances.

Here's the problem: you have to put all that stuff on your clearance, as you already know. Then the OCS application (ASPR) asks you to list "any derogatory" stuff from your SF-86. That would include an expunged arrest that you put on there, I'd imagine. It might look better to the board if it is expunged for some reason (makes a better case that it is bullshit). Fortunately, there is enough space on the application for you to outline what NavyOffRec explained, as well as to go into Virginia's mandatory arrest laws and anything else people advise you to do so that the board doesn't think you are a wifebeater.

Here is some gouge about ASTB scores from the last board. Keep in mind this board was considered less selective than normal and is only scores from applicants on this website, should give you an idea of what you'd need to score.

Been too long to speak to an OCS application, but more than one job application as a civilian has asked the arrest question. Strangely any companies that ask that question, I answer truthfully, and never get a call back from them. (mostly DOD contractors for flying gigs)
My lawyer back in the day indicated that civilian employers could only ask about criminal convictions. Security clearance checks are obviously different. I guess he was wrong.

What additional hoops do you have to go through? To be clear, you were arrested, then arraigned where charges were dropped? Not arraigned and then went to court? If the above is correct, I know someone (no, not me) in the same situation (and could have been legitimately prosecuted under the law) that has had zero issues. I've stood there while she's bought the gun and nothing happened. The 4473 only asks for convictions, not arrests.

I was arrested and arraigned, with charges later dropped.

Pretty much every gun purchase comes back as a hold from NICS and then I have to wait. I've had to send in paperwork showing charges were dropped and I don't have an outstanding restraining order about 10 times. Maybe 1 of 10 purchases goes right through.

Hornet AT's are a smart group, doubly so for the senior ones like yourself. I don't have any doubt that you can bring your ASTB score up with some practice and thinking about the sorts of questions involved. It isn't rocket science, but there is a method to the madness. If the next board sucks for pilots (I wouldn't have the first clue as to what selections have been like anytime in the last 5 years), then keep at it. One board might be dried up, and the next might be needing what you want. Obviously age may be a factor for you, but don't give up until they tell you that you have to.
