I received an email from my OSO about this and thought that some of you may be interested.
PBS has filmed a documentary on Marine training. It will air Feb. 21 at 2100 EST.
Overall, John Grant (the producer of the documentary) and his crew did an
outstanding job conveying the elements of what it takes to become and serve as a
Marine. The documentary takes viewers from the 'yellow footprints' to the
streets in Iraq; while spending a great deal of time explaining the Corps'
distinctive culture and warrior ethos. Through an in-depth look at the initial
training of Marines (recruit training and officer candidates school), a walk
through the history and tradition of the Corps, and focus on the Corps values of
honor, courage, and commitment; viewers see why Marines are known as Elite
Warriors and why the legacy of the Corps still lives on today.
Several interviews with Marines, former Marines, and military writers/analysis
highlight the mission of the Marine Corps being to Make Marines and Win Battles.
The Marine Corps is accurately portrayed as a military organization trained to
fight the enemy wherever he is, rather than trying to soften the idea of war and
the purpose of the military. Several Marines were interviewed in the
documentary; to include General Tryon and LtCol Zeliff. General Tryon was
interviewed as the Commanding General of MCRD, Parris Island. He did a fabulous
job walking the producer/viewers through the recruit training evolution and what
it means to become a United States Marine. LtCol Zeliff was interviewed as the
A/CS Advertising and described the purpose of our advertising campaign and what
the message is that we want to put out to our target audience.
