Dropping the R from USNR?

SNA Ensign
Has anyone heard anything about this? Some people in my class went to the local gear store to order their name tags and were told that they could no longer get USNR put on the leather tags. The rumor is that the navy is dropping the R from USNR for aviators since our commitment is 8 years after flight school. Anyone have any good/official gouge (like a link or something) on this?

There doesn't seem to be any NAVADMIN's about it. If the information came from the ladies working at Wings and Things, which I assume is the gear store you're talking about, then there might be something to it. I'll keep my ears open.

when i was at API long ago those folks at wings and things said they werent allowed to put the Naval Officer crest on the leather name tags. being the green ensign i was i went along with it. of course now i know its total BS. They might just be getting lazier by not putting the R in USNR.

What they said...leave the R. Patmack: The general rule seems to be 6 years for aviators. Yeah, I know the instruction says 4, but they automatically look at you at 6. I was going to blow it off and just wait until the end of my commitment, but a year and a half ago, admin asked for some info and submitted my stuff. It only took a year to get confirmed, but then it finally happened. Maybe admin was just being motivated..........but I really doubt it.

Ok, now here's a question for you...I've already finished my initial obligation, sort of. I went SWO first and then transferred to aviation. Can I augment? I'm too lazy to look it up right now. I've got 4 years and change in the Navy right now and I've got one warfare qual.

Wouldn't that be something...being a 1370? I've never had a 0 in my desig before.

Message comes out periodically with all the augmented bubbas on it, 6 years like gatordev said. For me, I didn't do any paperwork, and my name was still on the list, along with all the 1120s that I work with. But now, still have to wait for it to become official, I will see if I can dig the message up at work.

That's what I was referring to, message-wise. The initial message comes out designating you. Then there's the second message with the actual congressional confirmation. For me, it took a year. I heard it was held up w/ another item on the agenda, which is why it took so long. Hopefully you don't have the same issue.

Road Prog: Yeah, I'd give it a shot. Seems like you've met all the requirements. What do you have to lose? Of course, it will be a matter of whether the training command wants to help. I hear you on the zero. It's funny to see my name w/ out the R and a 0 after my SSN now.

I heard they were dropping the R as well. But it doesn't mean that we've all been augmented. It just means that the Navy started doing nametags like the USMC and USAF.

You are elgible to Augment at 4 years of service regardless of transitions, etc but you have to apply. If you do not apply when you first become elgible, a year or so later they will screen your whole YG anyway. They screened YG98 in Nov of 03, so I guess 2000 is up for it this Nov.

I am at OCS and there was word passed down from our Class Officer that starting with class 10-05 all new commissioned naval officers will be Regular Officers, not Reserve. I saw the paper on the bulletin board but it has been removed for an inspection. I will try to find more info.

This is true. Word came down from CNATRA that all Navy studs are required to get new nametags reading "USN" and dropping the "R". Methinks this is just a squadron plot to get us to pucker up $10, but oh well...

Has nothing to do with augmenting. We still have reserve commissions, just no "R" on the actual nametag or whatnot-- the memo from CNATRA said something about "We're all in the Navy"...

One of the LTs in my command was told that he didn't need to do anything for augment to USN because they were going to start (over the course of the next year) changing the whole system.

He said one of the changes was that ENS will no longer be comm in to USNR - only USN.

So ... could be true....

The following can be found at http://www.bupers.navy.mil/pers4420/ipjobsearch.html

"There will no longer be an AUGMENTATION Board held due to legislation passed in the FY05 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) creating an all Regular force, beginning 1 May 2005."

"IAW FY-2005 NDAA, beginning in 01 MAY 2006, all RESERVE commissioned officers on the Active Duty List (ADL) will be transitioned to REGULAR officer status provided they meet the requirements for appointment as a regular officer under 10 U.S.C. section 532 (citizen of the United States, able to complete 20 years active commissioned service by 62nd birthday, good moral character, physically qualified, and has such other special qualifications as the Secretary of the military department may prescribe). All reserve commissioned officers on the ADL who do not meet the requirements of 10 U.S.C section 532 may continue to serve with a reserve commission, pursuant to applicable provisions of policy and law, for no more than 5 years from enactment, 28 Oct 2009, or completion of mandatory active duty service obligation (ADSO) existing on 1 May 2005, whichever is later."

What would be some of the implications of having a regular commision vice reserve commission? Would it make it harder/impossible for them to just give you the boot if you attrite from flight training?
