Thought that was what NAPS was, or are you referring to the foundation program? If so, I don't know much about that one, other than some people went there, THEN to NAPS before heading to USNA.

Yeah, especially since VAdm Ryan 'owed' him from 'back in the day'. Earlier in said semester, when I knew I was having trouble, but not really grasping that I was going to get a 0.58 semester GPA, Assassin was the guest of honor at our birthday ball. He definitely remembered me from me being his driver at Pendleton, and we had a mostly one-sided conversation about me doing better when I mentioned that I was trying to keep my head above water. Later, after another mostly one-sided conversation with the Sup, 'Dant, Senior Marine, and various other >O-5 personnel (aka: Academic Board), the Sup explained what had happened. He informed me that I had a second chance, thanks to a certain Marine, and I had better not f*ck up, because that would displease him and the General greatly. (Adm Ryan was one of the nicest person that I have ever met, but he definitely had his angry eyes on that day.) This sentiment was repeated, albeit in even more colorful language, in a letter from the General about a week later. Given a change of major and the fact that I was backed into a corner, I made 'Dant's list the following semester and eventually graduated.

I'd say you proved you were worthy of his intercession. Hope you kept the letter.

You can go from foundation to NAPS or foundation to USNA. I've known guys that have done both. It's all up to the admissions board (since it's a new application after the foundation).

Wow, how many Youngsters do you think get such personal attention from DCS Air and the Supe? Probably none. And to think, I was sweating my AcBoard 2nd semester Plebe year (after a 1.65 Cum)...

Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone! I am trying to keep my options open, but going to the the academy would really be a dream come true for me. I am not trying to get the degree from the academy to boost my resume or anything like that. My intentions would be because I simply want it. I love overcoming challenges, and graduating from the Naval Academy would be a huge accomplishment for me.

From what I have read it seems that 'phrogpilot73' and 'gaijin6423' have both gone through the enlisting route. How long did it take you guys from the time you went off to boot camp to being accepted into the academy? Is it possible to knock out some of the paperwork before joining the Marines? When is the soonest time at which one can apply for the academies?

I hope no one gets the impression that I am trying to use the Corps as a stepping stone or anything like that because that couldn't be farther from my true intentions if I enlist.

That is correct, we have both gone the prior-enlisted to USNA route. From the time I shipped to boot camp until the time I was accepted to the Naval Academy was only 2 years. I did manage to squeeze 4 applications in though:
1. Senior year of High School
2. Right before boot camp
3. Right after boot camp
4. After being in my squadron for a year.

You can knock out some of the paperwork for the Naval Academy application before boot camp, HOWEVER - once you go on active duty, you have to follow MCO 1530.11G. SO, if you're foolish (like I was) all of a sudden, you'll be a recruit in boot camp, filling out paperwork for the Naval Academy - NOT a good scene. Can someone say "Quarterdeck?" - "Where's my little ZERO?!?" You can begin applying as soon as you want, and it's advisable with your scores - the more applications you put in indicate desire to the admissions board.
