EOD and SWCC

GO NAVY
I was wondering about EOD and whether it is guys with SEAL training or different training? Also are there officer EOD/SWCC guys cause someone has to lead those guys right? I guess my question boils down to can officers earn a SWCC warfare pin or whatever it is called. and do officers lead EOD detachments/units? I am sorry if this is confusing I am trying to figure out what role officers play in these units, and the overall role of these units. Thanks.

EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) guys are completely separate from SEAL's....different organization and different command. Their training is different from each other just as SWO's and Sub guys training is different. Both EOD and SEAL's go through extensive training, however, their missions are not the same. To answer you question about SWCC, yes, officers can and do earn SWCC warfare pins. A lot of the officer positions for SWCC are second tour SWO division officer billets. But of course, that means you need to do your first division officer tour on a ship.

EOD, SWCC, and Seals are all different beasts.

EOD Pipeline (My number three choice after SNA and SNFO:))
The Website is geared to the enlisted side but lets you get the jist of things

EOD Officers upon commissioning go to Dive School in Panama City, FL to earn thier Dive pin. From there they do a SWO Div O tour, usually on a minesweeper or the like.

That's the extent of what I know, because my buddy lat xfered after the SWO tour part ;)

I think you go to bomb school after that, and it should be noted, after Dive School and a SWO tour, my friend's designator was still the number for "EOD in training."

From what i've heard from my friend who is an EOD guy, they are doing away with the SWO tour requirement (Or have done away with it already)...

Master your ego, and you own your destiny.
Yeah, I think bomb school comes next. A buddy of mine just rolled into Eglin for the next stage after his SWO tour. I looked into it myself before selecting SNA, and your SWO tour is either on a minesweeper or a salvage ship.

It is also one of the longest training pipelines the Navy has. You finally get your EOD pin some 3-4 years after commisioning. My buddy just finished his SWO tour and he's working on 3 years already.

I read on the Socnet board that the pipeline was being (has been?) shortened in a major way. Anyone know of any changes?

TRAINING
EOD candidates will receive Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders to Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD), Eglin Air Force Base, Ft Walton Beach, Florida with TEMDUINST in route to Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC) Panama City, Florida.

A total of approx. 12 months of rigorous training begins with nine weeks of dive training at NDSTC. Students receive training in diving physics, medicine, SCUBA, MK16 mixed gas diving system, Hyperbaric chamber operation, familiarization of the MK21 Superlight surface supplied hard hat diving system, rubber raiding craft small boat operation and small team diving integration.

Upon successful completion of dive school, students transfer to the NAVSCOLEOD facility at Eglin AFB. Training in Eglin is 41 weeks, consisting of core classes, demolition of explosives, EOD tools and methods, chemical munitions and EOD publications.

The final phase of basic EOD training continues at NAVSCOLEOD, Eglin AFB Florida. Training is broken down into specific types of ordnance. Each division teaches an in depth course on both foreign and domestic weapons. These divisions are broken down into the following:
Ground Ordnance. Covers Landmines, grenades, booby traps and projected munitions (projectiles, mortars and rockets).
Air Ordnance. Bombs, missiles, egress systems, gun systems and aircraft explosive hazards.
Improvised Explosive Devices. Homemade bombs, terrorist devices and their render safe procedures.
Underwater Ordnance. Torpedoes, mines, underwater explosive devices, search techniques and foreign ordnance exploitation.
Nuclear Weapons. Basic nuclear physics and radiation monitoring, decontamination procedures and nuclear weapon render safe procedures.

That is probably because your link is for the enlisted side of the house. EOD Officer will do that training, but the EOD stuff comes after a ship tour.

SPECIAL OPERATIONS (1140) Updated 29 Aug 2006
Community Overview. Looking for something different and challenging? The 1140 Navy Special Operations (SPECOPS) community comprises the warfighting communities of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Under-Water Mine Countermeasures (UMCM) with expertise in Operational Diving and Salvage (ODS) and Explosive Ordnance Management (EOM). The Community offers a unique opportunity to motivated men and women who seek early leadership responsibilities and tough challenges. Assignments are based on performance, qualification, and personal desires, mirroring the URL warfare community. All aspects from initial training to command are included in the organization of the SPECOPS community. Junior officers are immediately trained as Navy Diving Officers and serve aboard Mine Countermeasures (MCM) and salvage ships to earn their qualification as Surface Warriors. After training in EOD, officers are immediately assigned as the Officer in Charge of EOD detachments, operating throughout the world. Throughout the Special Operations career, the tasks are varied and require personnel that enjoy responsibility, hard work, autonomy and an exciting atmosphere…Are you that person? As an officer progresses through a career in Navy Special Operations (SPECOPS), the following are four areas in which to serve:

Hey HAL thats how the program used to be. Here is how it is from the NROTC side of the house.

https://www.nrotc.navy.mil/specops.cfm

The newly commissioned officer from the NROTC program will complete the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)/Diver course at Naval Diving and Salvage Center, Panama City, FL and progress directly to EOD training at Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD), Eglin AFB. Graduates will then be assigned as Division Officers at EOD Mobile Units where they will be immersed in the community's core warfighting competencies of EOD, Anti terrorism/ Force Protection (AT/FP), Expeditionary Diving and Salvage and Underwater Mine Countermeasures. During this initial tour, officers will complete a rigorous qualification process involving a variety of Personnel Qualification Standards and advanced EOD, diving and mobility training requirements before earning warfare qualification. Officers who successfully meet warfare qualification standards will be redesignated 1140 and become eligible for assignment as Officer In Charge (OIC) of EOD Mobile Detachments. Post-Mobile Det OIC assignments include Operations officers at EOD Mobile Units and Mobile Dive and Salvage Units, EOD shore Det OICs, Carrier Support Group staffs, Expeditionary Support Group staffs and Mine Countermeasure squadron staffs. Additionally, officers have opportunity to pursue Graduate Education through a variety of programs at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, the Naval War College and other service colleges.
Here is a link to a powerpoint that discusses the Force Plan for Naval Security Forces (nothin' about commisiong sources unfortunately, but talks about some cool stuff)

Like Zippy was saying earlier The swos stuff was/is chaged (came along the same time that enlisted SpecWar, SpecOps warfare specialties and ratings got figured out)
- DIVO (6-10 months) Pre REQ Gone
- SWOS (4-6 wks) Pre REQ. Gone
- Complete DIVO tour Pre REQ. Gone
- ND/STC(18 wks) 9 weeks included in Below Time
- EOD School (51wks) What I posted above

SWCC remains an enlisted only school (despite several DEVGRU officers that have gone through it in the past). There is currently no gold (officer) version of the SWCC pin, but one is in the works with the recent creation of SWCC Warrant Officers to lead as OICs. Most SBT OICs are JO SEALs, SBTs are subordinate to NSWGs alongside the teams.

Hey HAL thats how the program used to be. Here is how it is from the NROTC side of the house.
The CNRC website was updated last August so any changes had to have come after then. So who is right? CRNC or NROTC? I don't know. I would think that the recruiting command would have up to date info for prespective candidates.
