This article says “NBC News confirmed soon after that the F-47 is in fact, named after Trump, the 47th president.
Might as well start naming individual aircraft after politicians now...Lyndsey Graham, flight of 2, ready for takeoff.

Edit: Request entry into the Musk Warning Area...Idiocracy level stuff really.

Of course we all know that 47 was chosen because of being a spiritual number...
The number 47 is a blend of the energies of the numbers 4 and 7. To understand its spiritual meaning, we need to break it down:
  • Number 4: This number is often associated with stability, hard work, practicality, and building strong foundations. It resonates with qualities like determination, responsibility, and integrity.
  • Number 7: On the other hand, 7 is deeply spiritual. It represents introspection, intuition, inner wisdom, and a connection to the divine. It’s a number that encourages you to seek truth and deeper understanding.
When combined, 47 carries a powerful message: balance between the material and spiritual worlds. It’s a reminder to stay grounded while also nurturing your spiritual growth.

Sounds about right to me.

I don't know the answer to this question, but when exactly was that designation decision made, and by whom?
I think, historically, they were numbered prior to any fly-off/down-select. The Sikorsky YUH-60 beat out the Boeing YUH-61 for UTTAS, and of course the X-35 beat the X-32.

I have no idea if this was done for USAF NGAD.

I believe there was a method in the madness of naming the future CVN 82 the William J. Clinton and the future CVN 83 the George W. Bush.

The Navy could, in theory, reconstruct the USS Philippine Sea (CV 47) and have her escorted by the USS Ticonderoga (CG 47), the USS Preble (DDG 47) and the USS Nicholas (FFG 47) and supported by USS Neches (AO 47). We could call it Carrier Strike Group 47.
