7 posts up from yours. It's not a legacy syllabus. The profiles have changed because the threat changed, but the aero and dynamic maneuvering techniques are still the same and taught at the RAG and as part of ACTC and work-ups.
During a MAU deployment in the min-80's we flew 2v2 CH-46 +50 cal. against Australian AF Mirage III +AIM9B +30mm.
This was in support of an exercise from RAAF Base Pearce. They used drag and bag as their primary tactic to get us to focus on one aircraft, as the wing then came at our six, guns guns. Also, they were crazy enough to go as low as they needed to keep us sky lighted. At times they were below 50' AGL at the speed of heat. Was an real eye opener as a helo guy, and we learned a lot at the debrief, hearing the encounters from the fast mover's perspective. Needless to say, happy hour with the Aussies is the source of legends.

Another thing we found out, and totally against the ROE (which are just guidelines to the Aussies), is that a Mach pass close to a helo will not knock you from the sky. Scare the hell out of you yes, but no damage. These engagements were done over several hours. We flew multiple crews to a field to watch the action and wait for their turn at bat, as the Mirage sections swapped from Pearce. Just after we changed crews of the -46,s as I was walking about 100' from the aircraft, a Mirage went over us, really low at Mach+. We learned something else that day, as the shock wave knocked me to the ground... If you are ever in a fight, you definitely want the Aussies on your side, they cheat, in all the best ways.
