Bought my first handgun yesterday. Thanks to fly for recommending the Ruger GP100. Stainless, 4 in. barrel, .357, GORGEOUS. Took my accountant [WIFE] to the shooting range this morning and shot 94 rounds of .38 special. Can't wait to go back with some 357. The wife enjoyed it so much she's already planning our next purchase. Something semi-auto.

Might I suggest the Sig Sauer P226 in .357 Sig?

Absolutely awesome gun. I recently bought one in .40 cal and love it. Feels great and shoots extrememly well. Now I just have to buy the .357 barrel for it for extra fun.
 
ParaOrdnance 1911s are nice (double stack!!!)...I'd never go with a Colt, their QC seems to be way down in comparison to other manufacturers these days.

My personal recommendation, though pricey, would be the FN Five seveN (look at those rounds!!):

Great choice, glad you like it :) It's a great handgun, I love just looking at mine :)

Can't go wrong with a SIG in semi-auto ;)

I will strongly recommend AGAINST the FN Five Seven if you want it for anything other than novelty. There is no practical application of the Five Seven for average joe... except a play toy.
 
Surprised that no one on here is a Glock fan, I absolutely love mine. Never had a single problem with it. I think it is a pretty damn fine looking firearm as well.

I don't like the Glocks all that much, just something about them doesn't appease me, in looks, feel, and operation on the range. But the Sigs are great. I love the P226 in 9 and 40, great guns.
 
I got a Glock 19 and 23C. Both awesome weapons.
 
All of those look really nice. The local range is also a dealer--guns, not drugs--and we were looking at his selection. He's got a Smith and Wesson 40 [I thought it was .40 but it was advertised as a 9mm--but I can't find a model 40 when researching it] that was right in our most immediate price range sub-300 but I don't know anything about it. I've also been looking at the Glock 22 .40, but am thinking I would rather something a little smaller. They're offering the concealed/carry class locally next month and will probably take it. However, it'll be a couple more months before I complete the app. Those sigs are really nice too. As are the Walther P-anything. Tough decision, though I think funds [the lack there-of] will definitely drive the next purchase.
